The police see us approaching and yell for us to stop.

“We know why he was here,” I explained.

The cops look at us and their eyes widen once they see my wound.

“We need an ambulance asap,” the female officer says into her radio.

The male officer approaches us and asks us if we are okay. I explained who Johnny was and they informed me that they got a call of someone walking in Central Park with a gun so they came before the first shot was fired.

“Thank you for being here,” Cam says to the police officers.

“Who is the guy?” the female cop asks.

“Johnny Anderson, my ex boyfriend…” Cam fills the cops in on everything as I make sure Maisey is still okay.

“Daddy, you’re bleeding.”

“It’s nothing. Are you alright?”

“I just want to go home.”

“We will soon. Daddy just has to get this looked at. You have been so brave today. I’m proud of you.”

Maisey hugs my leg tightly and then the ambulance finally arrives.

The paramedics see the dead body and me and their faces fall. Two of them rush to Johnny and try to save him but we all know it's too late. The third paramedic makes his way over to me.

“Can you take your jacket off?”

I nod and peal my jacket off of my bloody arm as I wince.

It hurts but I know that the wound needs to be cleaned and probably stitched.

“It looks like the bullet went through you but you’re going to need to go to the hospital to get this stitched up. We can take you as soon as the other ambulance gets here for the body.”

I nod and before I know it, Cam, Maisey, and I are being whisked away in an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

The hospital is surprisingly empty on a Saturday morning so they are able to rush me into a room to get stitches. They had to cut my shirt off due to the dried blood and it hurt like a bitch. I stay strong though because Maisey is watching with tears in her eyes.

“Is daddy going to be okay?” I hear Maisey ask Cam as I get stitches.

“Daddy is strong. He will be okay,” Cam responds.

I am overcome with the feeling of love and worship for Cam. She knows just what to say to comfort my daughter, which I hope will soon be our daughter.

The pain of getting stitches hurts but I bare my teeth through it. The only thing on my mind is that the box is still in my pocket unharmed and hopefully free of blood.

“We’re finished here Mr. Madison. You should be good to go, just make sure to clean the wound daily and come back in a few weeks to get the stitches out,” the nurse tells me.

I thank her before turning toward my family.

I don’t want to waste another moment of life without Cam so I do what has been on my mind for the last few weeks.

Hobbling over toward Cam and Maisey, I get down on one knee.

“What are you doing?” Cam asks with a furrowed brow.

Maisey looks just as confused.
