“Not usually. I have a house, and I like to be at home.”

“What is it you guys do?” I decide now that we’re alone, it’s a good time to ask. I’m curious since I never see Knight going to work or anything. Although, he is gone most of the day and comes home early in the mornings. I suppose he could be working.

“You don’t wanna know,” he says, looking the other way.

“I do want to know. I want to know what I’m dealing with,” I tell him. He turns to look at me, and that’s when I see the look in his eyes. I’m not going to like this.

“We own a strip club amongst a few other businesses.”

“That’s it?”

“No, that’s not it.” There’s a strange silence between us before it hits me.

“Illegal things?” He nods his head slowly before I take a step back.

“Don’t do that. Don’t walk away from me,” he almost pleads with me.

“I don’t want to be involved in that shit,” I tell him.

“You won’t be. I don’t bring my shit home, Lyra. What I do for the club stays at the club. When I’m home, I’m home.” I run my hand through my hair, unsure about all of this. About us. I shouldn’t be with someone like him. This is wrong.

“What are you thinkin’?”

“That this is wrong. I’m thinking, what the hell am I doing?” Knight steps into my space, cupping my face in his hands.

“We’re doin’ this, yeah? We’re gonna make this work, Lyra. We’re gonna make it all work out,” he assures me.

“How? I can’t be involved with this shit, Knight. I have kids who rely on me.”

“My shit is just that. My shit. It has nothin’ to do with the kids or you, understand? I promise you I will never drag this shit back to you.” I’d like to believe what he’s saying is true. I can see how he’s looking at me, pleading with his eyes. He gave me a piece of himself, and I still want to try this thing with him.

“Okay.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. As long as you keep it away from my kids, Knight. Cameron is already a handful. I don’t need him getting other ideas.”

“Me and him are gonna talk. I was a shithead back when I was younger too. It gets you nowhere in life. I’ll talk to him,” he reassures me. I nod my head before pressing my lips to his.

“This is all pretty crazy,” I murmur. He pulls away from me and drops onto the edge of the bed before he speaks.

“Yeah, it can be. The club is my life, though. They voted me in as VP, and this is where my life is.”

“You don’t see yourself getting out of this?” he shakes his head.

“No. Never. I took an oath, and I stand by it. These guys are the family I didn’t know I needed. They’re my brothers in every sense of the word.” I find myself smiling as he talks.

“I think it’s amazing you see them that way,” I tell him.

“It’s not just seein’ them that way. I know when shit goes down, they’ll have my back, and the same for them. We’re a team.”

“I like that, but where does that leave us?” He motions for me to sit next to him, and I do. The bed shifts as I take a seat, and Knight wraps his arm around me.

“We’re a team of our own, Mama. I told you I won’t bring my bullshit to your doorstep.”

“Thank you, Knight. For everything.”

“I haven’t even done shit.”
