That broke the dangerous spell. I let go, taking a single step away, which allowed to her push away from me. I expected her to run away from the bad man, but she stood her ground.

“You know nothing about me, Delaney, nothing at all.”

“And you know nothing about me.”

Her defiance had increased, something I thought impossible.

“What I know is that you’re an impetuous young woman with no understanding of reality. What I also know is that you like to play games. You seem to forget that some of them can be dangerous.”

“You really don’t trust me at all?” she asked. “You think I had something to do with that… horrible crime? Don’t you?”

I dropped my head, planting my hands on my hips just as she’d done. “It’s not a matter of trust, but it is something that’s earned, not given.”

“You’re right. I don’t trust you so why should you trust me? Isn’t that a shame since I once thought the sun and moon rose and set on you? Just so you know. I think Sadie is thirsty. That’s why I came to find you in the first place. I wanted to know where her water bowl was. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop on your dangerous life.”

Sweet Jesus. The venom dripping from her lips could poison an entire city.

Yeah, well, maybe you deserve it, buddy.

“You’re going to need to place your trust in me, Delaney. At least until I can figure out what’s going on. Anything less and you’llplace your life in danger more than necessary. If I’m harsh with you, there are reasons.”

She started to slip away from me then stopped. “You know what’s so sad? When that gorgeous dog bounded into the room and I learned she belonged to you, I thought for a few seconds you were a knight in shining armor, larger than life.”

“And now?”

“Honestly? I don’t know what to think. But my father trusts you so I will too. So you know. Maybe it’s me that I can’t trust. Not you. Take care of Sadie. She obviously loves you. I hope you love her too.”

Love.

I wasn’t certain I even knew what that meant any longer.

That was the moment she chose to walk out.

And I slammed my hand against the wall.

CHAPTER 14

Delaney

Morning.

Barely any sleep. Again.

Thinking of the muscular bodyguard and everything he’d said and done to me.

Again.

Craving him.

Again.

Feeling weightless, as if I was floating in space, looking down at my sordid life.

A new one.

What wasn’t new was the harsh reality of yet another phone call from one pissed-off agent. I was starting to think horrific thoughts about what I could do to Quince. Maybe I had an evil streak running through me.

“What is it, Quince? I don’t have any additional news about my return. You see, I’m being stalked by a very bad man, which is entirely different than the very bad man who’s now been assigned to protect me. I’m at my father’s house about a bazillion miles away from Los Angeles with soldiers surrounding me, keeping me prisoner. However, if you think it’s all about being pampered or hiding from the world, it’s not. It’s simply about trying to keep from becoming the latest gruesome murder victim.”
