“The point is thatshedid. Now get up off your sorry ass and go to her. Or do you need a solid hit to the face to wake the fuck up? We can’t mope around for the dead. It’s pointless, they are already gone. But your girl isn’t and she’s waiting for you.”

We both look down the hill to see Damien lifting Evie in his arms. He grunts, and she tries to yell at him as blood trickles down his arm. Finally, that seems to snap Alexi out of it.

I have no doubt losing his father just now feels like a shock, but we don’t get anything done sitting in the dirt.

Alexi storms down the grass to lift Evie out of Damien’s arms who’s yelling about being able to stand just fine. All three ofthem give her a pointed look before Alexi orders one of my men to patch up Damien.

Lev and Ivan sit back as Alexi climbs into the back of the SUV with Evie in his arms. I watch Lev shake his father’s hand before joining them, and the second Damien is patched up, he gets in behind them.

I feel sorry for the fucker that has to drive them home. There is no way that’s going to be a pleasant ride.

I pull up the rainbow contact on my home screen and hit call.

“Was Evie right?” she asks in a rush, worried about her friend.

“She was. Get to their place as soon as you can.”

“Sounds good, are you coming too, or should I tell Arrow to expect some company?”

“I have to help this transition. I have a bad feeling this is about to be a difficult process.”

“See you there then. You’re okay, right?”

“I’m okay. You need to call Nessa though.”

“Boris?” It’s just a whisper, but she knows.

“Yes.” I open the door to the car as she sighs.

“You sure you’re okay?”

“You worried about me, baby girl?” I ask as I climb into the driver’s seat of my car and switch the phone to bluetooth. The engine makes a strange sound starting up.

“Hold on just a second. The car is being weird,” I say as I lift the lever that pops the hood.

As soon as my eyes take in the device under the sheet of metal, I turn to jog away, diving behind a large statue just as an explosion sends the car flying into the air.

Heat whips around me, metal and car parts flying in all directions. Well, shit. These attempted hits are getting more and more exciting as we speak. I really should send an email to their board or something. I am one man, I shouldn’t be that hard to kill.

They should be embarrassed.

Chapter 46

I explained my side of the story on our way home from the cemetery. To say Alexi is pissed is probably an understatement. Doc called a few minutes in to deliver the news, and the car has been silent since.

We head back to the tower where I plan to shower then get to work. It’s going to be a lot to plan a funeral while taking over these organizations, and I want to be there for my guys.

We had all thought this would be a slow transition, where we each got a year to learn with Boris before taking over. Turns out, we were really fucking wrong there.

Havoc called to let us know about his car, and I called Laney afterward, seeing as he left his phone in the car when it blew up. Adrik and Rostya didn’t hold back today, they had a strong plan and it went way too well.

“We need to accelerate our timeline,” I say as I walk into Boris’ office. Or I guess it’s Alexi’s now.

Damien nods, seeming to be on another planet while Lev pulls me in for a hug. He was really worried, but it was nice to come out of that with his face being the first one I saw. And even more so, his voice being the first thing I heard. I give him a quick peck on the lips while I watch Alexi pace the floor on the phone.

He’s pulling at his hair, and his knuckles are white from how hard he grips the cellphone. As mad as he is with me right now, I still go to him. I don’t point out I was right or rub anything in his face. I just wrap my arm around his waist and lean into his side.

He relaxes slightly and finally ends the call with a clipped, “Got it.”
