It was a relief though. Just like Dr. K had said, the words came to me as easy as speaking once was. In some ways, it was even easier than speaking because no one was there to interrupt or move my train of thought. I got it all out and was finally able to make peace with who my father was.

I pass my phone over to Damien.

You can tell him.

He nods as he hands it back. “I’ve been in love with your son for a while now, Ivan. I’m here to support him and help take care of him when he needs to see his piece of shit father.”

Ivan winces, but I see it for what it is. He knows Damien’s right, and it hurts.

Good, it should.

My father sits down on the cold concrete floor with a long exhale. He crosses his legs and begins to open the envelope.

“Did they find the trackers?”

Damien crosses his arms, ignoring his question, but I nod to him.

“Yes, exactly where you said they would be. She was scanned for others as well and none were found.”

“Good. Adrik and Rostya are tricky bastards. I’m glad they didn’t subject her to more of that.”

“More of what?”

“Those injections hurt like a bitch, but what’s worse is they plant them right in the muscle, so it grows over it. It can cause damage if it’s left for too long, or it can stay sore for ages if it doesn’t heal properly.”

Damien takes a seat on the far wall, kicking his legs back as if talking to a prisoner were like any other day. “I’m insanelyconfused as to how you ever thought you were on the right side with them.”

“It’s amazing what you will let yourself believe when someone offers you the answers that you’ve been desperately searching for.” Ivan unfolds the letters and lays them in his lap before looking up at me.

“Do you want me to read them while you’re here?”

I pull out my phone and type a message for him. When I hold it out towards the cell door, he leans in to read it.

No. We have to go and get some stuff done. But I’ll be back.

Sitting back, he picks up the papers. “Then I look forward to seeing you soon, Son.”

I don’t respond. I just turn around and walk out. When we are up in the garage, Damien takes my hand.

“You okay, babe?”

I know I’ve been a mess, but that doesn’t mean I love him or want him any less. I reach out and wrap my hand around his neck before pulling him back to me. When our lips meet, I can feel his lips curve into a smile against mine.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” he murmurs.

I look around at all the fancy cars in the garage and my eyes lock on exactly what I’m looking for. Of course Boris has a black limousine in the back of the garage. I tug on Damien’s arm, pulling him to it and climbing inside.

Damien’s hazel gaze locks on mine when he shuts the door, and our bodies collide like two bolts of lightning coming together.Fuck, we need this. I need him.

He kisses me like I’m his anchor, and I kiss him back knowing he’s mine. We begin to frantically pull at each other’s clothes when Damien holds out a hand and stops us mid embrace.

“Are you sure, baby?” The worry in his tone only makes me love him more.

I think he can tell things are getting better for me. He saw the paintings and journal. He knows I’m talking to Dr. K. And the moment I handed that letter to my father, it felt like all of the weight on my shoulders finally became bearable.

I lean in and kiss him, proving I’m ready for this. I need him and everything he can give me.

Damien takes control of the kiss quickly, dominating me in a way I know he needs. I’ve seen him stepping up and taking charge, he deserves an outlet too.
