I honestly don’t know what I was thinking, except that I wasn’t.

It’s New Year’s Eve, and like the hopeless fool I am, I decided to drive up the mountain to try and mend things with Chase.

While I was in Florida, he called and texted me about a million times. At first, I convinced myself I was staying strong by not talking to him. I figured it was best to give myself some time to think things through. So, I decided not to respond and just focus on holiday stuff.

But by the time I got on the plane this morning, I changed my mind. I felt guilty, and I missed him.

In my rush to head up the mountain, I got too close to the edge of the road, and before I knew it, my tires lost traction in all the snow and ice.

Now, I’m dangling precariously off the side of a cliff with only a tree preventing me from sliding down the drop.

I look down, and panic blooms in my throat.

The edge of the cliff looks like a gnashing maw, its depths swallowed in darkness. Somewhere far below, the icy glisten of a frozen river catches in the car's headlights.

The tree that's become my temporary lifeline creaks ominously under the weight of my car. Its roots, clawing desperately into the frozen ground, are the only things standing between me and the drop—a sheer, terrifying precipice that plunges into the frosty abyss.

I close my eyes, trying to calm down from the adrenaline rush. I can feel my heart pounding in my chest as I see how high up I am and how far the drop is.

Half an hour later, I hear a booming voice outside my car.

“Molly? Molly, are you in there?”

No, it can’t be…

Chase?

I look out my driver’s side window, and even through the light dusting of snow covering the glass, I see the outline of Chase’s burly frame coming toward me.

A few seconds later, the veil of snow is wiped away from my driver’s side window and I see Chase looking at me.

He’s wearing a thick coat and a knit beanie, and his face is tinged red from the cold, but his eyes are sparkling, and he looks as sexy as ever.

"Chase? What are you doing here?"

Chase chuckles lightly, his breath fogging up in the cold. "What does it look like? I'm here to rescue you."

"How did you even know I was here? I called the fire department."

"They're tied up on another call. They sent me instead."

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I whisper, "You still came to rescue me even though I've been ignoring you?"

"You're mine, baby. Of course, I came to rescue you. But we can talk about that later. Right now, I need you to open the car door so I can get you out. Can you do that for me?"

I nod, my heart pounding in my chest. "Okay."

"Alright, I need you to unbuckle your seatbelt, but do it slowly," Chase says, his voice low and soothing. "We don't want to jolt the car."

My hands tremble as I reach for the seatbelt. I press the release button slowly, making sure to keep my movements as smooth as possible. The seatbelt retracts, the soft 'click' reverberating like a gunshot in the silence of the winter night.

"Good girl," Chase praises, his voice breaking through the silence. "Now, I need you to slowly move towards the passenger side of your car. Keep your movements slow and steady, okay?"

With a deep breath, I grab the steering wheel for support and start to inch my way over to the passenger side. Each movement is careful, deliberate. I can feel the car shift under my weight, groaning in protest. I wince, praying that the tree continues to hold me in place.

After what seems like an eternity, I finally reach the passenger side. Chase is there, his hand reaching out for mine. His eyes hold nothing but reassurance and determination, reminding methat I'm not alone in this. With one final glance at the precarious drop behind me, I reach out and firmly grasp Chase's hand.

Instantly, his strong arms envelope me, pulling me close against his warm body.
