Page 18 of Coming Home

“So I can do this…”

That was our first kiss. Sweet, funny, and public. The whole school knew then that we were dating.

I look up at Asher now, his face close to mine, and those stunning green eyes darkening with desire. I’m simply lost in them. As he leans down, his eyes dipping to my lips, I become mesmerized and allow the moment to take me.

Our lips crash together in fiery passion and desperation. His sandalwood smell and taste engulf me as his mouth devours mine. Time seems to stand still, and nothing else matters except the feeling of coming home.

As Asher releases my mouth to trail kisses down my neck, a soft moan escapes my throat.

“Samantha,” Asher whispers. “I want you. Only ever you.”

Out of nowhere, it’s as if a bucket of ice water tipped over my head just now, and I pull back. I remember it all. The hurt, the heartbreak, the cheating.

I step away from him. The mood is gone and I shake my head. “Sorry Asher, I can't.”

I turn away from him and make my way down the Treehouse, ignoring his calls for me to return.

As I leave, I curse my stupidity for allowing him to get so close to me.

During my walk back to town and my rental, I can’t help but recall that night so many years ago. The night my trust in him was shattered, and the walls around my heart began taking shape.

I’m coming down the stairs, ready to go out to a party I didn’t really want to go to, and see both my parents in the living room.

“I’m heading out to meet Asher,” I call out.

“Samantha, come here. We need to talk,” my mom calls to me as my hand is on the doorknob, ready to leave.

I backpedal to the living room entrance. “Mom, I'm heading out, can’t it wait?”

“No, Sam,” my father says, and I give him a scathing look.

“Mom, what's up? I don't want to be late,” I say to her, ignoring my father.

“Honey, sit,” she says, and I begin to feel the severity of this conversation.

I remain standing as fear begins to take root in my stomach. “What's going on?”

“Honey, your dad and I are getting a divorce,” she says bluntly.

I turn on him. “This is your fault!”

“Baby, things just aren’t as—” he begins, but I don’t want to hear it.

“You just couldn’t keep your dick in your pants could you?” I shout.

‘You don’t speak to me like that!” he shouts back.

“I’ll do whatever the fuck I want! You aren’t a part of this family anymore. Just get the hell out and go stay with your whore,” I scream at him.

“Samantha!” my mother cries out in shock. She has never heard me say a curse word in her life. “Don’t speak to your father like that.”

“He isn’t my father. My dad wouldn’t be fucking someone who isn’t his wife and my mother.” I walk out of the living room, leaving them both staring after me in stupefaction.

As I rush out of the house, just before the door slams behind me, I can hear my father calling out to me, but I don't care. He can go to hell.

At the party, I look around for Asher. I need my boyfriend and someone to talk to.

I grab a few drinks as I make the rounds at Valerie’s house, searching the rooms and asking people for Asher. Before I can find him, I begin to feel the alcohol hitting me hard.
