“I quit! You’re crazy!” She screamed at me while running out of the room.

I sighed, turning to my secretary. “Find me a new administrative assistant. Jonah can’t be expected to handle his job as my PA and cover for an admin.”

Chapter four

Mandy and Roger

Anxiously,IhurriedtoRoger’s office, my heart pounding. This was the day I’d been waiting for—I’d finally see Roger and confront him.

I spent the last two weeks trying to track him down. I was shocked at what I learned. His face was plastered everywhere in New York. I was starting to realize that he was somewhat of a big shot.

As I entered the sleek, modern building, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. XDE Athletics was a company renowned for its success. I couldn’t believe this was Roger’s company. Mr. Hotshot, the CEO, was about to have his world turned upside down and had no idea it was coming.

The receptionist greeted me with a warm smile and requested my resume.

“My resume?” I asked, confused.

“Aren’t you here for the position? The administrative assistant opening for the CEO?” she asked, equally surprised.

I panicked. Of course, I needed some cover-up story to get close to Roger, or I’d seem like a stalker, even crazy.

“Yes, of course,” I smiled.

I handed her my resume from my handbag. I’d carried it with me as a backup plan. If I decided not to share my pregnancy, or Roger chose to deny the baby, I’d need a job.

She gestured towards the seat in the waiting room as she glanced over it.

“Please have a seat. The secretary will call you for an interview. I’ll pass your file to her,” she said.

I nodded and sat in the waiting room. There were about seven other people seated.

I tried making small talk, but everyone was so hostile toward each other. They just glared at each other-sizing up the competition. This must be a very coveted role, admin for the CEO.

I couldn’t give two fucks about this job. I just wanted to march in there and tell that asshole that he’s uprooted my life. By planting his seed in me, he’s half responsible. He doesn’t get to walk away from it—no parading as an eligible New York bachelor while I remained a single mother.

We’d do this together. We’d do it right whether he likes it or not! ‘What if he doesn’t want the baby?’ A quiet voice asked me in my mind.

I was so lost in thought that I didn’t hear my name being announced repeatedly over the speaker. The receptionist tapped me softly.

“They’re calling you,” she said to me.

I blinked and stared into the faces of the applicants. They all kept quiet despite hearing my name.

As I came in, the woman glanced at me and then back at my resume.

“Good morning, ma’am,” I greeted politely.

“Pretty, smart, and a hustler. You’ll do,” she mumbled, ignoring my greeting.

“Ma’am, excuse me?” I asked, trying to understand what she was saying.

“You’re hired, Mandy. You’ll need to sign this contract, and we need you to start immediately,” she said.

I blinked, stunned at the way the interview had gone.

“You aren’t going to interview me?”

“No need for formality. Your resume fits along with your personality. You’re exactly what he and this office need. Besides, you’re pretty, and he likes pretty girls,” she replied.
