He likes pretty girls? What kind of father would he be? Does he hire based on looks?

“So, are you going to do this? There’re plenty of applicants waiting,” she said, holding the contract for me to sign.

I stared at the contract and read through it. My eyes widened slightly when I saw what the salary was listed. I wouldn’t be able to find anything paying close to this amount.

No wonder everyone out there was ready to kill to get this job. I signed the contract and smiled.

“Please take the elevator to the tenth floor. His office is the first door on the right,” the woman smiled.

I suddenly felt as if I was having a panic attack as I walked into the elevator. Immediately, I felt sick. Barging in on Roger wasn’t a bright idea. I was walking into the lion’s den with my type of news.

I took a deep breath to steady my nerves. I knocked on his door.

“Come in,” a voice called from inside.

I pushed the door open- there he was—the man who’d turned my world upside down with a one-night stand. I was about to repay that favor with my ‘life-altering’ news.

He was sitting at his desk, engrossed in his work. A serious expression etched across his face. As I approached him, I couldn’t help but notice how incredibly wealthy he appeared. The extravagant office, the designer suit—he seemed to have it all.

“Mandy,” he said, finally looking up. The look of surprise was evident on his face. He quickly faked a small smile. “I, umm, Well, I’m glad you’re here. We’re in desperate need of a new Administrative Assistant. The secretary informed me the new hire was on her way up. I had no idea that it was you.”

I nodded, trying to hide my awe at his wealth. “I’m ready to take on the position. I’ve worked hard to get here and won’t disappoint you. I’m also surprised you remembered me, considering how you fled.” I wanted to get a jab in when I could.

Roger’s smile faded slightly. “Mandy, I need to make something clear. We can’t be romantically involved. It’d complicate things, both personally and professionally. I’ve just gotten out of a lousy engagement. I’m not looking for any serious relationship.”

My heart sank as incredible disappointment washed over me. I’d convinced myself there was a chance for us. Roger’s words shattered my hopes, leaving me feeling foolish for entertaining such thoughts.

However, I was too upset with him to care at that moment. The fire in my eyes matched the determination in my voice.

“Don’t worry, Roger. I’m not here for romance. I’m here to do my job.”

His expression showed relief. “Good. I’m glad we’re on the same page.”

I tried to rein in my anger. He was acting like that night hadn’t happened and that it…that I was just a piece of ass.

“Is this what you do?” I suddenly asked, my anger rising to the surface. “You go around seducing women into your bed, then disappear?”

He frowned and stared at me. “Don’t make this awkward, Mandy. You said you came for the job.”

“I came from Italy to see an asshole—the one who was too much of a coward to face me. The one who left in the middle of the night after his one-night fling,” I snapped, venom dripping from my voice.

He scoffed. His expression was confusion and surprise. “Mandy, please. I can’t afford a scandal right now. Especially after the last stunt my ex pulled.”

His words cut deep into my heart like a knife. I hated myself for thinking that he had any redeeming qualities at all.

He only saw me as a scandal—someone who would create problems for him in his work. I’d entertained the thought that maybe he had something urgent to attend to in New York. Standing before him now, I realized he was like the rest.

He didn’t deserve me. He doesn’t deserve to know about the baby. I’ll take care of our baby myself.

I nodded, biting my cheeks and holding back the tears.

“You already had a scandal with your ex. A second one this soon would be disastrous.” I said hatefully.

“Mandy, I don’t know what your problem is with me. It was just sex. I’m sorry I didn’t stay and say goodbye. Does that make you feel better?” he asked.

I moved instinctually, slapping him hard against his cheek.

I gasped as he touched the spot where the blow landed. He stared at me like I was a crazy stalker. I honestly felt like one.
