Roger

“I didn’t know Stefan was your brother. You never mentioned it,” Roger said. He didn’t give me time to close the door before commenting. He looked very stunned.

“Well, now you know. Why? Is it going to be a problem? Besides, when would he have come up in our conversation.” I shrugged indifferently.

“No, it’s not. Like I said, I’m only surprised, but it’s nothing to worry about,” he insisted.

Just then, Stefan walked back in.

“Oh, you’re here, Mandy,” he said as he sat on the couch.

“Thought you left already?” Roger asked him.

Stefan shrugged and then stared at me. “What happened?”

“Well, I came back to discuss something with Roger. It appears he’s busy, so I’ll check back,” I muttered. I dashed out of the office, slamming the door behind me.

The moment I was out, I took a deep breath. I sank heavily into the chair behind me.

“Oh my goodness! I feel so exhausted,” I said, running my hands through my hair. I was settling back into work when my desk phone rang.

“Can’t I have a few minutes to get my thoughts together?” I muttered in frustration.

I heaved a deep sigh and then picked up the call.

“Hello, Mandy speaking. How may I help you?” I said in a sweet, soothing, and charming voice. It would have left anyone listening in awe of me.

“Erm… Erm…. Can you step in for a few seconds? It’s important,” Roger said. He was disrupting the sweet thoughts that were running through my head.

“All right. I’ll be right there,” I grumbled, quickly hanging up the phone.

“To think I was trying to sound professional. All that effort was wasted on that arrogant dickhead, Roger.”

My heart was pounding the closer I got to his office. I can’t help wondering why he sent for me again just minutes after I left his office.

I knocked twice while I waited for him to invite me in. After a few minutes, he still hadn’t answered. I was starting to get pissed. I knocked again, hoping he would reply. I didn’t want to barge in.

“Come in,” he replied immediately.

“Thank goodness,” I whispered under my breath. I opened the door and walked in, wondering what was in store for me. He raised his head to me with a bright smile. Stefan was sitting on the couch, busy on his laptop.

“You wanted me?”

“Yes, I did. An urgent matter arose, and I’d like you to handle it as quickly as possible.”

I couldn’t understand his request. Why would I handle an ‘urgent matter’ on my first day on the job? Why me? Well, it’s not like I have a choice—time to suck it up.

“Sure, it’s not a problem,” I lied as I smiled at him. “What do you need me to do?”

“I need to get important documents to a client, but I can’t step away. I need you to deliver this to him.”

“A man?” I blurted out before thinking. I was immediately embarrassed for saying it out loud.

“Is there a problem with that?” He asked with a grin. I would bet my last dollar he knew what I meant.

“No, I don’t have a problem with that. I just wanted to confirm if I heard you correctly. What details do I need to be aware of? I mean, what am I delivering to him? You know, the basic things,” I shrugged.

“Here. This is what you’ll need, and handle this carefully. I’ll immediately have my secretary forward any additional details to your email.” He buried his head back in his work.
