I narrow my eyes, wondering where this is coming from. “Why does that matter?”

“Because he’s my teammate. I don’t want to start an unnecessary fight with him.”

“Unnecessary? What’s that supposed to mean?” I pull away from his grip.

He takes a minute as he inhales a deep breath. “It means, if you guys are together and he finds out what happened last night, it could cause some shit on my team.”

“Is that what you’re worried about?” I raise my voice slightly. “Your team?” He looks at me, but doesn’t say anything, so I continue, “Here I was, up all night, trying to figure out what last night meant and if you and I were going to be together now, and all you’re worried about is your team?”

“I thought you liked him.”

I have to step away and take a deep breath so I don’t reach out and smack the shit out of him.

“Do you really think I would have sex with you if Beau and I were truly together?”

He shrugs, and I step toward him aggressively.

“Is that why you slept with me? Because you thought I was someone else’s? Isn’t that why you kissed me the first time too?”

“No.” He grabs my hip, and I allow him to do so, though he’s got seconds to explain himself. “That’s not it at all.”

“Then, what is it, Aaron?”

“I don’t know, all right?” His voice rises an octave. “You’re my best friend. The girl I’ve known forever.”

“Yeah?”

“I shouldn’t want you.” He pauses and looks into my eyes, and we stare at each other for a second before he continues, “But I do.”

“Then, why are you fighting it? News flash, Aaron: you already had me. I gave myself to you. Don’t you get that? I didn’t give it to Beau. I gave it to you.”

I stick my finger in his chest, and he grabs my hand, keeping it there.

We stare at each other, both not sure what else to say.

He rubs my hand with his. “So, you and Beau aren’t a thing?”

I shake my head. “We’ve kissed. We talk randomly. That’s it. We’re nothing official.”

He opens his legs and pulls me so I’m in between them. “Then, what does that mean for us?”

“What do you want it to mean?” I put the ball back in his court.

“Your dad won’t like this.”

I grin. “My dad only trusts me if I’m with you. If he only knew …”

He lets out a laugh as he brings me that extra few inches into him. “So, you’re my girl?”

I grin. “Aaron, I’ve always been your girl.”

When he kisses me, I feel my words to my toes. I guess my best friend is more than I thought he would ever be.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

Sophomore Year

Aaron and I stayed at the lake for a little while before heading back home. Though we’re not ready to come out and tell my dad yet, we’re both all in, and it’s an amazing feeling.
