I didnotwant it.

Adrian was slightly empowered by what I said, and I saw him reach a hand to smooth his sleek brown hair.

“If the lady wants you to leave, you should leave,” he said.

Beau flicked angry eyes to him, really looking at Adrian for the first time.

“This lady ismine,” he said with finality. “And I’m not leaving without her.”

Adrian opened his mouth, then closed it again, looking at Beau warily. The big dancer was still just leaning back casually in his chair, but there was an attitude of suppressed violence around him.

“Go find someone else,” Beau said, and I heard that line of steel in his voice. “The next time you see her, she’ll be pregnant with my baby.”

Adrian must have been too shocked to think about what he was saying, because he burst out with, “She doesn’thaveto get pregnant.”

Beau lunged at him, both his hands wrapping around Adrian’s throat.

I saw Adrian’s eyes widen in shock, hands trying ineffectively to get Beau off.

I felt panic course through my body, then I upended the table, spilling the drinks all over Adrian and Beau and knocking the two men apart.

Then I bolted out of the restaurant as fast as I could, trying to yank my black minidress down as I ran. I immediately darted down a side street, and almost sprinted to my hotel room.

The buildings were dense downtown, and I took a circuitous route to my hotel, in case he was following me.

I checked several times, whipping my head around so fast that my braid stung my cheek, but I didn’t see Beau behind me.

ELOWYN

Back in my hotel room, I reassured myself that choking Adrian didn’t necessarily mean Beau was serious about impregnating me. The man once upended an entire jug of sticky lemony water over my head, for God’s sake.

He would get bored and drop the whole thing.

Right?

Then I heard the fire alarm go off.

For a moment I felt a searing panic. Ofcourse, of all days to have to sit around for an hour while they put out a fire from someone smoking in bed. I started putting on my shoes to go back downstairs when I glanced out of my window and I saw a big blonde man in the parking lot, standing facing the hotel and watching all the people streaming out. I’d recognize that body and the arrogant set of his arms anywhere.

Fuck.

I backed away from the window, flattening myself against the wall as I heard the fire trucks blazing down the road toward the hotel.

I was going to have to explain to the fire department why I hadn’t vacated the building, but I wasnotgoing down there.

I waited for the firefighters to come door to door, trying to calm my breathing down. He didn’t know where I was. He didn’t know which room I was in.

“Fire,” I heard a gruff voice say, and I yanked the door open hastily, hoping to explain myself and get the door shut before Beau found me, but I felt a big hand go over my mouth and I was dragged back into the room.

I screamed as loudly as I could, but it was muffled under Beau’s hand as he kicked the door shut behind him.

Then he moved his hand and kissed me, his lips desperate and urgent.

“I’m sorry, Elowyn,” he said. “I can’t stay away from you.”

I ripped myself out of his arms and reached for the hotel ironing board, swinging it at Beau’s head.
