Chapter 3

After being gone all weekend and going straight to work that morning from visiting her friend, Evie walked into her apartment. She was grateful for the excuse to visit Amy, a friend from college, and even more grateful Amy didn’t ask a bunch of probing questions.

Now that she was home, it was time to face her new reality and get her life back on track.

Time to make a list.

First, change her social media status.

Second, call her parents.

Calling her parents probably needed to be first on her list, but she needed to complete a task immediately in order to feel she had accomplished something in her life, and changing her social status would achieve that goal.

“How was your weekend?” Amanda asked the moment Evie walked into the apartment they shared.

“It was good… and needed.”

“Do you need to talk?” Amanda asked.

Amanda had been Evie’s roommate for almost six months. Evie moved to Colorado almost a year ago after she graduated with a degree in Animal and Veterinary Science. She had applied to various veterinary clinics throughout Utah, Nevada, and California but didn’t have any luck with getting past the second interview. It irritated Evie that once the interviewer saw her in person, they didn’t seem as interested as when they spoke with her over the phone.

Amy often teased Evie that her good looks paid off in some ways but were a detriment in others. Evie didn’t think that looks should matter at all. What mattered was whether or not she was good at what she did. Evie knew she was a good veterinarian.

When Amy encouraged her to move to Colorado to work at her parents’ veterinary clinic, Evie decided to do it. It was better to get a foot in the door and earn some money than daydream and wait for the perfect job to land in front of her.

At least she knew she’d get along with her roommate.

Unfortunately for Evie, two months later, Amy got engaged, and four months after that, she got married leaving Evie looking for a roommate. At the wedding reception, Evie met Amanda. They were assigned to the same table and they instantly became friends.

Amanda was also from California, raised on a ranch, and was a member of the same church as Evie. Even their first and middle names were the same. Luckily for Evie, Amanda needed a place to live as she had just separated from her husband and filed for divorce. Amanda admitted she no longer attended church, but she didn’t drink, smoke, or live a life that would cause tension, so Evie said they could try it out for a month.

Six months later, they were still roommates.

“I need to call my parents first, and then I’ll come out and talk,” Evie said.

“I won’t be going anywhere… literally!” Amanda moaned.

“Sounds like you have a story to tell as well,” Evie added.

“We’ll talk when you’re finished talking to your parents.”

Evie forced a smile and then walked into her bedroom. She kicked off her Crocs, took off her scrubs, and put on a loose-fit tee and yoga pants. She plopped on her bed and told Siri to call her mom.

“Hi, sweetheart,” Kimi answered. “How’s my engaged girl?”

“Dang it!” Evie mumbled to herself. “What good is a list if you don’t follow it?”

She forgot to change her social media status first, so now she had to re-visualize her list and move parents to item number one.

“I’m alright,” Evie muttered.

“It doesn’t sound like it. What happened?” Kimi inquired.

“Is that Evie?”

Evie heard her father’s voice in the background and smiled. Not only did she have the most perfect father in the world, but he had wanted her to be his daughter. After Evie turned eighteen, she asked if he would legally adopt her… and he did. She knew he would since he had previously adopted Renee and Lake. Now… she felt whole knowing he was legally her father.

“Evie!” Spence declared.
