“Not to my family’s, but to the show! It’ll be perfect for you!”

“No way!” Evie uttered. “Reality TV is not my thing.”

“It would be perfect. Our names are practically the same. Amanda Evelyn Kahl and Amanda Evelyn Call.”

“But not!” insisted Evie.

“Kahl… Call… potato… pototo… that’s the only difference in our names.”

“I have work,” Evie grinned with satisfaction knowing that would be her saving grace.

“Oh, yeah. Stupid work!” Amanda moaned. “I’ll just email them tomorrow and some loser runner-up will get to take my place.”

“I’m sorry, Amanda. Life can suck sometimes.”

“I’m sorry you’re no longer engaged, and yes… life does suck, sometimes.”

“Ice cream?” Evie offered.

“Yes! Who needs a healthy dinner?”

“I’ll drive.”

“Evie, Dr. Arnold would like a word with you in his office.”

Evie had just finished typing up the notes from her last patient of the day, Dixie the Pomeranian, and walked to Dr. Arnold’s office.

“Have a seat, Evie.”

Evie looked at the chair against the wall and sat down.

“You’ve been working here now for over a year, right?”

“Yes, I have.”

“And you have a veterinary degree, right?”

“Correct.” Evie suddenly began to feel that this conversation wasn’t going to end on a happy note.

“And you specialized with large animals, correct?”

“That is correct, Dr. Arnold.”

“May I ask why you haven’t begun working with what you went to school for?”

“I’ve been searching and looking around, but so far, I can’t seem to get past the first interview.”

“Let me be frank with you, Evie. Our daughter Amy was correct that you would be a hard worker and we enjoyed having you. It’s obvious you love animals but I think you are better suited for a clinic for large animals. You are always talking about horses, pigs, and cows and how much you miss the country. Am I right?”

“Are you letting me go, sir?”

Dr. Arnold nodded his head. “My wife and I are getting ready to retire and we need to hire someone who will be able to make an offer on our business in a couple of years. An application came to us last week and we interviewed the doctor. He is a good match for our clientele and comes with high recommendations.”

“Oh,” Evie sighed.

“He starts tomorrow.” Dr. Arnold pushed a manila envelope toward Evie. “Inside is your severance check, plus two months' bonus and three letters of reference. Amy doesn’t know yet, but we’ll be telling her tonight. She’ll be upset with us because she brought you out here to Colorado.”

Evie nodded in agreement. She could visualize that conversation and Amy would be the most vocal.
