“You bring those,” Amanda laughed. “And bring a swimsuit. You’ll definitely need that.”

“Why?”

“Besides the beach, the house you’ll be staying at has a really nice pool.”

“Sweet!” Evie expressed as she opened her dresser drawer and pulled out a swimsuit.

“Not that one!” Amanda almost yelled. She ripped it out of her hands and searched for the newer one Evie bought in late spring.

“I don’t think I should wear that one, Keith said…”

“And you’re no longer engaged to Keith. Wear it. Enjoy the sun… and the peace… and whatever else may come along.”

“How do I get to where I need to go once I land in San Diego?” Evie asked.

“Once you get your luggage, there will be someone holding up a sign with your name on it.”

“You mean your name,” Evie corrected.

“Not anymore. I just emailed them and let them know there was an error in my last name and they’re changing it to Call.”

“Modern technology. This is crazy.” Evie paused and took two deep breaths. “I guess I’m really doing this.”

“Yes, you are!” Amanda agreed with excitement as she searched her closet for clothes. “What about bringing this?”

Amanda pulled out a floor-length semi-formal dress.

Evie’s face grimaced. “What use would I have for that? I’m looking for a job, silly!” Evie laughed.

“But you should bring a dress because they’ll be having nice dinners some of the nights.”

Evie furrowed her brow and sighed, “Alright, but I won’t be taking that. I’ll bring my business suit.” Evie grabbed the dress Amanda was holding, returned it to her closet and then grabbed her business suit and a simple Sunday dress. She plopped it in her suitcase and then turned and picked up a stack of books from her nightstand. “I am bringing these!” Evie said as she placed her scriptures and three reading books inside her suitcase.

“If you insist on your scriptures, okay, but the reading books stay.” Amanda took the three reading books out of her suitcase.

“What if I want to read while lounging at the pool?”

“I’m sure there are tons of books in the library.”

“They have a library, too?” Evie’s eyes widened. “Who cares if they don’t find me a job? I’ll be swimming and reading! Now that’s a vacation!

After they finished filling up her suitcases, Amanda and Evie both sat on the carpet in Evie’s room and chatted about their future and all the possibilities that might arise. Amanda had one day left until she was officially single. Evie had one day left until she boarded a plane and flew to California for hopefully at least a week… if not two.

They both agreed that when she got back, they would go on a double date and start anew.

Chapter 4

Matt could not believe he stood where he stood. He was looking at a coastal California mansion, sporting a private beach with the Pacific Ocean behind it. Standing next to him was a man talking to him about the owners of the home who agreed to go on a month's vacation to Europe and allow the broadcasting crew to store the owner’s personal belongings in a storage unit so the home could be used as the central meeting place for the next two weeks.

Two days after Matt and Bobby had submitted their applications to be The Host, Matt got a call. He had been on his morning run when the music in his air pods stopped and notified him of an incoming call. Matt normally ignored his calls while he ran, but since he didn’t have to go to work, he found himself touching his air pod and accepting the call.

It took him a few more seconds to register who was calling. The shock of realizing who it was made him stop.

“Can you please repeat that again?” Matt asked. He was sure he missed something important.

“After reviewing all of the applicants, the director has chosen you to be our new Host. Do you accept?”

“How many applicants applied?” Matt inquired.
