“My mom says it’s my fast metabolism, and she tells me it’ll catch up to me one day, but for the present, I’ll enjoy what I can eat now,” Evie chuckled.

“I have to stay away from carbs most of the time,” Callie added. “They tend to bloat me.”

The three women continued with light conversation as they talked about families, hobbies, and places they’d like to visit. Eventually, breakfast was over and the invitations for lunch were passed out. Callie, Crystal, Zoe, Neveah, and Verlia were invited. Evie felt a tinge of irritation as she felt she was being pushed to the back of the line… yet again.

That was a feeling she wasn’t used to… and she didn’t like it… and it made her even madder that she didn’t like that she didn’t like it.

Evie took a deep breath, told Callie she was excited that she would get to have lunch on the beach, and then informed both Callie and Baylor that it was time to let her know what was so funny the night before.

Callie and Baylor smiled at each other and then ushered Evie out of the kitchen. Callie led them to a room off the side of the great room and entered. Here was the library and Evie sighed with contentment.

“After you two are done telling me what was so funny, I’m going to spend the rest of my afternoon in here!”

“Sit, my friend,” Baylor insisted.

The three sat down on a couple of oversized chairs, and a cameraman followed from behind.

“Read this,” Callie insisted as she shoved her invitation to lunch in Evie’s hand.

Evie took the invitation and then looked at Callie with questioning eyes.

“Read it! It’ll answer all your questions.”

Evie opened the letter that was similar to the one she received the night before as well as in the limo. Inside it read:

Callie,

Please accept this invitation to have lunch with me at the beach. I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you better in the hopes of seeing if we have a connection. I hope you won’t be too disappointed that today’s lunch will be a bit uneventful, but rest assured, I’m planning something in the future that will be “fun” according to you.

With much affection,

Matt

“What?” Evie asked, confused. “I don’t get it. How does this have anything to do with jobs? It sounds like he just asked you out on a date!”

Callie looked at Evie with sympathy in her eyes.

Evie’s brow furrowed and then her eyes widened. “Are you saying he did?” Her breathing began to increase. “He asked you out? Can he do that?”

Evie looked at Callie, then at Baylor, and then back to Callie.

“Did the other women receive an invitation as well?”

“I don’t know what theirs said, but yes, it’s with the same end in mind.”

Evie stood up and began pacing the library.

“This is supposed to be a reality show for finding better jobs.”

“Who told you that?”

“My roommate!” Evie blurted.

“Think back,” Baylor said calmly. “Is that what your roommate said, or do you think you misunderstood her?”

Evie continued to walk back and forth as she raked her hands through her hair and rubbed her eyes vigorously with the palms of her hands.

“What did Amanda say?” Evie asked the air around her. “What did I say? I asked if The Host could help me get a new job and Amanda said he could definitely help me find something new for my life.”
