“This is the first time I’ve seen the ratings!” Tom rejoiced as he handed the paper to Brian.

“Wow!” Brian responded. He looked again at the paper and then shot his head up so fast, Evie thought he would have whiplash… but she didn’t think about that for long because Brian was looking at her with his mouth open.

“What?” Evie demanded. “What’s wrong?”

“Not wrong, Miss Call,” Tom interrupted. “You should be asking, "What's right?””

“Miss Call,” Brian interjected. “Will you please wait for us out in the hall?” Brian got up and opened his door. He motioned for Evie to walk out of his office, which she did, and then he closed the door.

Evie waited for what seemed to be an eternity. She listened as carefully as she could, but she couldn’t distinguish any coherent sentences except for, “This is great!” and “Who would have thought!” and “... figure it out.”

Eventually, the door opened again and she was asked to enter Brian’s office. She sat down and smiled. The two men smiled in return. “So… I’m able to get out of my contract?”

The two men stopped smiling and shook their heads.

“We are truly sorry, Miss. You have signed the contract and you are bound to it.”

Evie’s heart sank. “What would happen to me if I just got up and left?”

“In the contract here,” Tom moved the paper toward Evie and pointed to a highlighted portion, “it states that if the candidate desires to leave before being sent home by The Host, she will be sued for $100,000.”

“$100,000?” Evie uttered. She hung her head down and moaned. If she had only read the contract completely! She couldn’t blame any of this on Amanda. This was all her doing. “I want to call my lawyer,” Evie conceded.

“Do you know the number?” Tom asked sincerely.

“It’s on my phone.”

“What’s your lawyer’s name?”

“Lake Call.”

“Call?” Brian asked suspiciously.

“Yes. He’s also my brother.”

“But he’s a lawyer?”

“I found his number. He’s close by in Irvine,” Tom announced as he was scrolling through his phone. “Is this your brother?” Tom asked as he showed Evie his phone.

Evie nodded, “Yes.”

Tom picked up the landline and dialed Lake’s number. Once Lake answered, Tom put the phone on speaker.

“Mr. Call, my name is Tom Berks.”

“I know who you are Mr. Berks. What can I do for you?”

“I have your sister, Evie,”

“Evie?” Lake uttered. “What’s wrong.”

“I’ll give you two some privacy so she can tell you what has been happening, and then we’ll need to talk.”

“Thank you.”

Tom picked up the handset and handed it to Evie. He then motioned for everyone else to exit the room. “When you are done talking with your brother, please come and get us.”

Evie nodded her head and waited for the two men to exit the office. Then she put the handset to her ear. “Lake?” Evie whimpered.
