Evie sighed in relief and proceeded to follow the man through the same door he came in, down a hallway that looked like a tent, and into a bigger tented building with rooms divided inside.

The man walked to a door that said Brian: Liability Manager. He offered Evie a chair and then asked, “What seems to be the problem?”

“Thank you so much, sir. I’m so sorry, but this is a big mistake. I was misinformed about what kind of reality show this really was. I thought it was a reality show to help find a better job, but I just now found out it’s a dating show.”

“I’m surprised you thought it was a show to find a job because the application form stated clearly that this was a dating show. And if that misled you, then the phone interview we had with you two weeks ago made it very clear as we asked questions regarding your relationship status, emotional well-being, and whether are not you were ready to pursue a romantic relationship that would be publicly known.”

Evie’s head lowered as she felt regret for not asking better-clarifying questions from Amanda.

“I know this may sound strange, sir, but I wasn’t the one who initially signed up. My roommate did.”

“Your roommate?” Brian asked incredulously.

“Yes. My roommate. She loves anything to do with reality shows, so she signed up for this new one. This is a new one… right?”

“Yes. This is The Host’s first year… and maybe it’s last if we keep hitting speed bumps,” Brian sighed. “Keep going.”

“So, her name is Amanda Evelyn Kahl, spelled k-a-h-l. My name is Amanda Evelyn Call, spelled c-a-l-l. A couple of days before she was to finalize the last details, something happened in her family, and she needed to fly home to be with them. I had just broken off an engagement, so she jokingly asked if I wanted to switch places. I told her I wasn’t into reality shows and that was it. The next day, I lost my job, and I was in such a state of shock, I asked her if the job reality show was still available… and she said yes.”

“But this isn’t a job reality show.”

“I know!” Evie blurted. “And believe you me, when I’m done here… she’ll be getting an earful from me!”

Brian rubbed his forehead and then picked up the phone. “Will you please bring me the file of Amanda Evelyn Call?” Brian then called another number. “Will you please come to my office?” and then he hung up.

Moments later, a young lady walked in with a file folder with her name on it. She handed it to Brian and then left. Seconds later, another person walked in. He wore flip-flops, shorts, and a Hawaiian shirt.

“What’s up, Brian?”

“Hi, Tom. This is Amanda Evelyn, or Evie, or whoever she says she is. Her roommate was the one who signed up to be a candidate, but Evie here took her place. She didn’t realize it was a dating show, and now she wants to get out of her contract.”

Tom looked at Evie and then picked up the file that was given to Brian. After Tom looked at various forms including her own signature when she arrived the day before, he nodded his head. Tom flipped through more pages in the file and then shook his head. Finally, Tom placed the file on the desk in front of Evie and pointed to a spot on the page.

“Is this your signature?” he asked.

Evie looked at it and said it was.

“Is this your full name? Not your roommates?”

“Yes, that is my full name.”

Tom then flipped to another paper and pointed.

“Is this your name?”

“That is my roommate's name. The last name is Kahl instead of Call.”

“Hmmm,” Tom uttered. He picked up the phone and dialed out. “Have last night's ratings and votes come in?” Tom paused. “Good, please bring them to me. I’m in Brian’s office.”

Evie sat restlessly as she waited in silence for this new person to arrive. Tom continued to riffle back and forth through the file. He would occasionally stop to add a sticky note to the paperwork and then continue to read.

What Evie really wanted at that moment was her phone. She wanted to call her parents and ask if they could help her get out of this situation.

Finally, a young man wearing a headphone set entered the office. “Here you go, Tom.”

Tom grabbed the paperwork and within seconds his eyes widened with surprise and then he smiled.

“Good news?” Brian asked.
