And that was just what he did.

An hour later, he was showered, dressed, and waiting in the great room facing nine women. He was so pleased to see Evie bravely standing there in the same gorgeous dress she wore earlier.

He would send her home that night. It was the least he could do.

Carl started the closing ceremony by talking about the nine dates Matt had been on that day, where they went, and what they did. Each woman told Carl what the favorite part of their date had been for her. Evie said she wouldn’t share her favorite part, but that her second favorite part of their date was their conversation.

The smile Evie gave him sent him mixed messages. Did she smile like that because she knew he would be sending her home? Or was the welcoming smile something completely different? Was the “I love being with you smile,” her way of telling him she’d changed her mind? That she wanted to stay?

The first person he sent home was Devanee. He wasn’t sure if it was her or not who cut Evie’s hair, and the probability of her just following along with what someone else wanted her to do was high… but either way… he didn’t want anything else to do with her.

He invited Callie to stay. He had promised her a fun one-on-one and he had yet to follow through. Besides, she was kind to Evie and that deserved a fun one-on-one.

The next person he sent home was Maeve. She was fun and easy to talk to, but he had lost any sort of connection he felt when he first met her.

He invited Baylor to stay. She was genuine and had a similar purity about her as Evie did… and she was also kind to Evie. But Baylor was more like a sister to him and he was sure she felt the same way towards him.

He next sent Dorothy home and invited Aaliyah to stay.

Now he faced three women. Verlia, Evie, and Neveah.

He realized his error immediately. He could only send one woman home and he promised that to Evie. He didn’t want Neveah to stay either because she was cold and calculating. Not someone who was warm and welcoming. How many poor unsuspecting men had succumbed to her perfection just to be burned in the end?

He didn’t talk much with Michele as he got ready for the night’s ceremony, but that didn’t prevent Michele from talking. She expressed her anger toward whoever cut Evie’s hair but she also wondered if letting a certain person go would prevent finding out who had cut Evie’s hair.

He tended to agree with her.

So, letting Evie go was the only logical choice.

“Neveah,” he announced.

She smiled sweetly and stepped toward him. “Yes, my love?” she asked tenderly.

Matt was ever glad he learned to mask his feelings because he wanted to physically recoil at her saying he was her love.

“Will you please accept my invitation to stay?”

The look of absolute pleasure crept over her face and then a smirk of conceit took its place.

“You know I will!” She then stepped forward and kissed him soundly on the lips.

He pinched his lips tightly and then smiled as politely as he could.

Carl spoke again bringing the attention to the two women left.

Verlia and Evie.

Matt began to sweat. He was going to send Evie home and that was final.

It was the right thing to do… right?

As he opened his mouth to invite the one he would send home to step forward, his mouth went dry.

What was going on?

He changed his question and decided to invite the one he intended to have stay step forward.

He opened his mouth, and yet again his mouth went dry.
