Less than twenty minutes later, we were ready. I kept my hand on Blade’s thigh as he drove, whisking us through the beautiful Colorado roadways. We’d never be able to return, although I’d learned to never say never, but our little house was ready at least in nearby Montana, even though not a soul we knew would be made aware of our location.

The long driveway was flanked by the most gorgeous trees, and although they were capped in fresh snow, I could imagine them on a spring morning. Flakes fell against the windshield, dotting the expansive glass with various sizes and shapes. I was mesmerized by their simple beauty, a sign of hope.

Everyone needed a moment of hope. No matter what deeds we’d done in the past or the terrible decisions we made, we were allowed salvation. I’d only just realized that after spending time with Blade. With Erik. With… Swallowing the heavy lump in my throat, I realized I couldn’t remember his new name.

A tear slipped past my lashes, falling slowly onto my cheek. As the house came into view, I held my breath. I didn’t know the people huddled in warm clothing standing on the porch, no doubt swallowed in apprehension of their own. What I did know was the man sitting next to me. Strong. Honest. Caring. Full of love.

He was the love of my life.

Pulling the SUV to a stop, Blade slid the gear into park, hesitating before shutting off the engine. “I think the storm is going to be significant.”

“We’ll weather the storm. As long as I’m by your side, we’ll be fine.”

“Sound like a Hallmark card.” A snort slipped from his lips.

“Very funny,sir.”

Exhaling, he glanced in my direction. “All kidding aside, you are my rock. You’re the reason I’m here. And you’re everything to me.”

When he leaned over, kissing my lips, I gripped his hand. Everything was going to be all right.

I waited until he walked around, letting me out of the passenger side, his hand firmly gripping mine. Every step slow and methodical, he walked closer to the group of people, and I could swear I still heard his beating heart.

“Erik.” The woman’s voice was whispered as she slowly crept down the stairs. “Is it really you?”

“Mom.” His voice barely audible, he glanced from his mother to what I knew to be his father. Then his sister, the lovely woman who’d spent hours on the phone with both of us.

Then to his brother—his strong and handsome brother.

Dane.

He was alive.

He was healthy.

He was thriving.

And all because of a horrific choice made by his brother.

Redemption was sweet.

The End
