“This is why she should come with me.” Serena turned around to me. “You’re not mated to her, talk to the others and let me take her somewhere safe where we can work together.”

“You want me to tell my brothers to let go of their mate?” The growl escaped.

Ryder’s eyes flashed gold.

“If it means keeping her alive, yes!”

“If she stays in her room, she is fine, she has been fine for nine months,” I replied trying to keep my cool. “If she dies because of this stupid curse while she’s with you, would you be ok with stealing their happiness for the last few months? I will not ask my brothers to give up three months with her just because it makes you feel better.”

Her lips trembled again.

“Serena, you can’t ask that,” Ryder said, wrapping an arm around her.

“Ryder, she might die and…” She broke down crying. “She’s… She’s my sister.”

“We are trying everything in our power to make sure she will not die,” I said. “The best thing we can do is get the items we need for this spell and if it doesn’t work move on to the next thing and hope that works.”

“He’s right, Serena, the quicker we can get those items the better.” One of the vampires came up to her.

“Come on.” Ryder picked her up as she wrapped her legs around his waist. “It’s getting late, and I don’t want him to wolf out.” He nodded at me before turning around to leave.

“Please take care of her, I know she is not your mate but please keep her safe,” she pleaded, as they walked away.

“I will,” I said, hating what I promised, because I didn’t know if I could keep it or not.

KATARINA

Isat up quickly, scanning the room, feeling like I was being watched. My shirt was drenched with sweat, my heart was pounding, the feel of electricity still felt like it danced along my skin. I shivered from the memory of Clodius shocking me. A soft knock caught my attention, but I couldn’t stop the fear that coursed through me.

I was safe. Intruders don’t knock.

“Come in,” I said, but my voice was still shaky.

Mr. Potter came in with a tray just like he normally did. It triggered me and I started bawling.

“Katarina?” His voice was full of sympathy. “I’m so sorry.”

I felt his ghostly embrace but it was just as comforting. He held me while I had my breakdown. He kept holding me, with no judgment. I let it all out, every fear, every worry, everything that has been weighing on my shoulders.

Once I let everything out, and all you could hear was a hiccup here or there. Mr. Potter’s arms were too comforting for me to pull away just yet.

“Was it a nightmare?” he asked, pulling away to look at me.

I nodded.

“Your husband seems hellbent on getting you back, makes me wonder why,” he said, letting go of me, turning around to bring the tray back to me.

“He wants an heir, so he has a shot at being the one who leads the coven. Once my father steps down there will be a contest or tournament that will put all the eligible Belladonna men in.” I took a deep breath. “There are three requirements. You have to be a Belladonna or a Belladonna through marriage, you have to be a man and you have to have an heir.”

“Your family is more chauvinistic than I imagined.” He set the tray down. It had a bowl of soup with bread and the butter I loved so much.

“My family is stuck in their ways because they think that men are superior, and they are meant to rule the world.” I hugged my legs to my chest, grabbing a roll. “My sisters Nora and Octavia aren’t that powerful. Their husbands are, but not really leaders. Ivan is head over heels for Nora. He cheated the system by making the highest bid for her. From what I heard he sold some pretty valuable things for her. It was very romantic.”

“Bidding? They held an auction for you?” He looked disgusted.

“Yup, a ball is hosted. Powerful families from all over the world come to see the Belladonna women. Since my mother and father had four girls, families were foaming at the mouth to get their way into our family.”
