“What about Octavia and Serena?”

“Octavia lucked out with a kind man. They don’t love each other but they do well together. He’s a good dad. And Serena… well I don’t know how she has gotten away with not marrying someone, Serena is extremely powerful.”

“That is strange, do you think your father has other plans for her?”

“I don’t know, I think my father may have a soft spot for Serena.”

“What does your mother think?” he asked, as he assessed me.

“My mother died giving birth to Serena,” I said, looking away.

I was too raw to be thinking about my mother, someone I had longed to meet, wondering if my life would have been different.

“That is awful, I’m so sorry,” he said, checking my hands and wrist. Apparently the side effects of applecide were numbness of hands, feet, also vomiting, and rash. “How do your hands and feet feel?”

“A little tingly,” I said, flexing my hands.

“Here, I found a recipe to manage the symptoms and hopefully flush it out of your system.” He gave me a vial that I just stared at.

I knew my hesitation was stupid, but I drank that tea because I thought he had given it to me. It wasn’t his fault, but I couldn’t help overthinking everything.

“I’m sorry,” he said, looking sad. “I knew something was off that night, but I assumed it was just me being paranoid.”

“You don’t have to say sorry, we let our guard down and unfortunately we paid for it,” I said, taking the vial of whatever was in it, still slightly worried I was making a mistake.

“I need to pay better attention, I’ve looked up small perimeter alarms, so we won't have this happen next time.” He smiled at me, and I knew my hesitation was unwarranted. Mr. Potter was more than any of us deserved.

“Thank you, I didn’t even?—”

The door opened, interrupting me.

“Kitten.” Aeon practically threw himself on me.

Thankfully the tray was saved by Mr. Potter. He was sweaty and out of breath.

“Are you ok?” I panicked, wondering what had happened to him.

“I had to see you,” he said, nuzzling into my neck. “I've been trying to force the shift.”

“What time is it?” I ran my hand down his back.

“I’ll bring another bowl up for you to eat, Aeon.

Mr. Potter left the room.

“I just needed you, Kitten, even though we got you back yesterday.” He leaned up to look at me. “Shifting yesterday was the hardest thing I had to do. After you fell asleep I felt the pull of the curse, but I didn’t want to let go of you. Every protective instinct I had in me wanted to stay with you, but I failed. It still pulled me under.”

“Aeon.” I cupped his cheek.

“I failed to protect you, Katarina, I’m so sorry.”

His face held nothing but remorse.

“Aeon, you can’t?—”

“As your mate I’m supposed to protect you and I…”

“Aeon—”
