“Oh, so he’s too strong when I’m here, but not for you guys alone?”

“Katarina, quit being a pain in the ass!” he yelled at her.

Her eyes grew wide, looking at Zev and Lucien. “Are you really going to let him speak to me like that?”

“He’s got a point, Kit Kat,” Lucien said, shrugging.

“Let’s get you somewhere safe and?—”

“Oh, fuck all of you,” Katarina snarled.

“There are eighty-seven people out there, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more nearby.” The vampire came back unaware of the tension in the room.

“Great twelve-ish for each of us, now can we please?—”

“Katarina!”

Caston’s voice boomed, making everyone freeze.

“Get your ass out here and your punishment won’t be so harsh.”

We all growled. For a second, Katarina looked like that same woman who was afraid of him last time he came, then she looked around at us and smirked.

“I can distract him, but I need everyone else to take care of his little army. Think you can do that little thing?”

“No,” Zev growled.

“Gray, I can’t hear you,” Ryder said, while holding on to his ear. “What?”

“Look, he can't control me anymore, and I’m far from helpless now.” She looked confident. “Let's not drag this out.”

“Fuck! Run!” Ryder pushed Katarina.

I grabbed her hand as I raced her to the library as the first set of bombs started to go off. We made it to the library when I saw the other vampire fighting someone by the entrance, he was quick to break his neck as I saw a few more people around him.

“Aeon, wait, where's Lucien?”

Katarina looked around but only Ryder and Zev were behind us.

“He can withstand fire,” Zev said, pushing her out of the way when another bomb landed in front of us.

I expected to feel agony since it was so close to me, but Katarina had erected a wall of fire to keep us safe. Men came into the library, but the wall of fire kept them outside.

“On three, let it fall, Katarina,” I yelled.

She nodded, concentrating on the wall.

“One, two, three,” I said, quietly enough that they wouldn’t hear me.

She released the wall, and I froze them in time as Ryder and Zev jumped them. Katarina lit one of them on fire as the vampire ripped one of their heads off. We had taken care of six in a matter of seconds. Maybe Katarina’s idea wasn’t such a bad one.

Katarina turned around quickly to go back for Lucien. Zev grabbed her around the waist dragging her back.

“Zev, put me the fuck down.” She pushed him away when he set her down.

“You don’t leave without one of us, you don’t go anywhere alone, and don’t be a hero,” he snapped at her.

“Don’t speak to me that way, I’m not helpless.” She stood closer to him. “Just because you’re my mate doesn’t mean you get to boss me around telling me what I can and cannot do.”
