“I was wanting to keep you alive, but the more I think about it, the more I think you just need to die,” I said, getting close to the bar, feeling everyone tense. “I thought maybe you had more information or maybe I thought I couldn’t do it.”

“You kill me, and they will still come. There's no saving anyone, even you,” he rasped out.

“They?” I asked, hoping for an answer.

“The gods,” he laughed.

Either Caston was really deranged, or he truly believed the gods would return to earth.

“Another god war is going to decimate you and I can only hope I’m here to witness your death.”

He caught on fire before he could say anything else. I added air to engulf him in flames as he yelled in agony. He thrashed in his cell, the flames growing out of control.

“We should have kept him alive for information purposes,” Aeon said, staring at Caston.

“Fine,” Lucien said, rolling his eyes, extinguishing the flames instantly.

“He’s still going to die,” Zev said, as we looked at a crispy Caston, groaning softly, gasping for air.

“He deserves a slow death,” I said, filling his lungs with water, letting him drown to death, before turning away and getting out of the basement. As much as I wanted to be happy, I didn’t know how I felt about another god war.

“We should have done what you threatened, Lu.” Aeon caught up to me with the guys.

“I mean, either way he’s dead,” Lucien said.

“We still need to see your father.” Gerard had caught up to us.

I took a deep breath wanting nothing but to go back to bed. “Lead the way.”

Gerard led us to our dining room. I assumed we were going to meet him in his office. When we walked in, my father and my sisters with their husbands were also there.

My father quickly stood up, making the guys tense up.

“Thank you for joining us, Katarina,” my father said, with an uneasy look on his face. “Please sit.”

I looked at the four chairs on either side of my father, thinking all of this just felt wrong. My sister's expressions were neutral as were their husbands, and I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. One of the guys pulled out my seat, whileZev sat next to me. Aeon or Lucien made no move to sit down standing behind Zev and I.

My father looked at them before nodding his head.

“So, I know there is a lot of explaining to do, but I just want to apologize first.”

I stilled at his words, wondering if I was in the twilight zone.

“I hated the prophecy that your aunt had of you. In a way, I felt like it dictated our lives, but I also hated that she could tell me that the love of my life was going to die.” He cleared his throat. “I shut down after your mother died because I didn’t know how else to deal. Serena pushed me to make amends with you before you left, but I didn’t know how I could undo years of hurt. I was also dealing with so much push from Caston’s family that everything felt like it was going to go wrong. So, it was easier to continue to be an asshole to you because if it didn’t work out then I was protected.”

I pursed my lips together because I didn’t want to cry.

“Everything I've done was to ensure your survival. All those self-defense classes, me pushing you, and even sending Caston to the castle because I was hoping they would kill him and it would be one less headache.” He took a sip from his glass of water. “I knew they were supposed to fall in love with you but when it came to the prophecies, she said everything had to be perfect. So even one thing out of place could have thrown the entire future out of balance. Even Serena’s death was supposed to happen, and I think that’s where a lot of my anger stemmed from. I had lost my wife, and I was bound to lose my daughters too.”

“This doesn’t excuse anything and if I’m being quite honest it's an awful excuse, but I’m so proud of you Katarina. Caston’s family was so dead set on gaining our power that it made things even more difficult. Even against all odds you survived, you persevered, and you did what not even Vivienne Belladonnacould do. You brought our families together and you will be able to accomplish what no one else has done. As a pack you have all the elements, you will lead us into a new era.”

I didn’t know what to say as tears gathered in my eyes. I was feeling overwhelmed with all the information.

“I don’t know if I could ever forgive you. You put everyone in a bad position and why would you sell me to a man like Caston?” I looked away from him to stop the tears from spilling over. “I suffered for your lack of parenting and emotional maturity.”

“I know, I regret the way I acted, but the more I dug my grave, the more I just relented to lying in it. I’m?—”

“I suffered for what?!” I slammed my hand on the table, my anger getting the best of me. “I went into this blind, scared and alone. I could have fucking died, and you didn’t give me the courtesy to give the people I love a proper goodbye. Even my nieces and nephews knew!”
