The wind blew hard, pushing snow against us. Lucien held me against himself, steadying me like he always did. Once the wind had died down, he pushed the door closed, letting me see Aeon and Zev at the edge of the roof with three men.

“Lu, what’s going on?” I said, as we walked over to them on a narrow part of the roof that didn’t have a steep edge.

He didn’t say anything, but kept holding on to me as we got closer to them. Zev looked furious and Aeon looked murderous as he held a man close to the edge.

“What’s going on?” I shivered against Lucien when we reached the guys.

“Tell her,” Aeon snapped.

The man he was holding close to the edge had chattering teeth. He looked at me with disgust, but I saw the fear in his eyes.

“Tell her!” Aeon yelled, his eyes flashing yellow.

“If Caston didn’t retrieve you, he was going to make sure he had an heir one way or another,” he said, through clenched teeth.

I looked at him confused about how he would manage an heir if I wasn’t there. When he didn’t say more, I rolled my eyes.

“And?!” I asked, getting annoyed.

“You really are dumb,” he spat.

Aeon threw him off the edge with no remorse.

“Really, A?” Zev snapped and I couldn’t believe he threw the guy off the roof.

“Someone better tell her, before I throw someone else off the roof,” Aeon snarled.

“He was going to try and impregnate your sister Serena.” One of them spoke quickly.

“Excuse me,” I said quickly, thinking I had misheard. “Did you say he was going to try and impregnate Serena?”

“Ye… yes,” said the man on the right side, looking terrified.

“What the hell would that have accomplished?” I said out loud, not expecting an answer.

“If he has an heir he can invoke the trials,” the man answered me.

“He can’t until…”

“It doesn’t say if the heir is born or not,” he said, interrupting me. “The document just states an heir, and he intends to use that to win control of the Belladonnas.”

“I know he’s power hungry, but my father would never allow it,” I said, trying to figure out what I was missing.

“Your father is a piece of shit who is trying to hoard all the power for himself,” the other man spat.

Even though I hated my father, I felt the need to protect him and I didn’t know why.

“And you don’t think Caston is a power-hungry asshole too?” I questioned, leaving Lucien’s grasp, walking towards the men.

They both looked at me warily, like they were ready for my retaliation.

“What are Caston’s plans? I want details or you will follow your friend to his death,” I said, looking between them.

“All I know is we were sent here to retrieve you, he wants you for some reason because he keeps saying you are the key.” The man who was less aggressive responded.

The aggressive one glared at him like he had just given me all of Caston’s secrets.

“The key for what?” I asked, desperate for an answer.
