“Lucien! Aeon! Mr. Potter!” My voice cracked at the end, sending me into a coughing fit. My side flared in pain as I tried to control my coughing. It felt like I couldn’t take a deep enough breath.

“Katarina!” The voice sounded far away.

“Help!” I yelled in between coughing trying to walk down the corridor.

“Ms. Katarina.” Mr. Potter appeared right in front of me looking relieved.

“Zev,” I coughed. “Blood everywhere.”

I pointed to the room behind me, but he looked me over quickly.

“He’s dying,” I snapped. “Go to him.”

“The curse…”

“You said there might not be a next time if we died,” I said, catching my breath, feeling more pain with each new inhalation.

He looked at me conflicted before he went to Zev.

“Kit Kat.” Lucien came running to me.

I flinched before he got to me, afraid he would scoop me up, hurting me more. He stopped right in front of me, and began to look over my body.

“Aeon?” I felt him, but I didn’t know if he was ok.

“In our room.” He reached out to touch me, cupping my face.

“Lucien!” Mr. Potter yelled.

“Go, he’s dying,” I said, holding back my tears.

“Fuck, I love you.” He rested his forehead against mine before heading into the room.

Lucien’s anxiety immediately hit me. He was scared.

“We need to get him up to the room,” Mr. Potter said as he and Lucien carried a human Zev out. He was bleeding freely on his side, and I quickly took my sweater off to push it against his side. My pain didn’t matter when the possibility of losing Zev was so high.

Please don’t leave me.

I tried to keep up with them but the quicker they walked the more out of breath I became. We were on the second floor on the west wing, which is why the room wasn’t familiar.

We climbed the stairs to our room, where Aeon was waiting for us, looking how I felt. There wasn’t a part of my body that didn’t hurt.

“Shit,” Aeon said, getting up from the bed as they laid him down. Mr. Potter disappeared quickly, appearing with his medical bag.

“He shouldn’t have done that, I had you,” Aeon snapped.

He didn’t have me, I almost fell, but that wasn’t his fault. I tried to rub his back when he flinched. He was all scratched up and so were his arms.

“Aeon—”

“Don’t—” he snapped at me, walking out of the room.

His rejection hurt, but the venom in his voice was worse. Aeon had been going down a path of anger that I didn’t know if he was ever going to come out of. The curse was getting to all of us, and even if we did break the spell, I didn’t know if our bond would survive the stress.

I bit my lip to keep myself from crying, but the worst part of it was the looks Lucien and Mr. Potter gave me. It almost broke me because neither of them looked hopeful for our future, making the nervous energy in me even worse.

Mr. Potter went back to tending to Zev and all I could think about was trying to survive one day at a time, except that felt harder to do with every passing day.
