“No.” He sat up, wiping his eyes, but I stopped him from cleaning his eyes with my shirt.

“I got it, stay here,” I said, getting up as he stood up with me.

“Come on.” Lucien walked away from me. “We probably don’t have much time with her.”

“There’s a fire in the corner, put it out before it spreads,” I said, following him.

He spotted the flames and they instantly died.

We walked over to Aeon, who was already sitting up. His shirt was singed along with his chest as well as his cheek. His head was down as he took deep breaths.

“Where is she?” His voice was hoarse.

“We don’t know,” I said, squatting down in front of him. “You, ok?”

“Yeah, my… I’m fine. We have to find her,” he said with urgency.

I helped him up, seeing him wince a few times.

“Sit down, Lucien and…”

“We will all look,” he interrupted me, walking away with a limp.

I nodded, looking around until I heard a whimper. We all turned around, walking quickly, closer to the circle.

“Fuck,” Katarina cried out.

Hearing her cry was like a claw to the chest, trying to rip out my heart. She was close to the door outside, and all of the windows were blown out. She laid on her side, under a few books with glass all around her. Her hands covered her face as she cried.

I clenched my jaw in anger, feeling her disappointment, her anger and most of all her inadequacy. When I got close enough, I pushed as much glass as I could away from her.

“Katarina,” I said, kneeling next to her.

“Baby.” Lucien pulled her into his arm as she let go and sobbed.

“I’m sorry, I’m so fucking sorry,” she said frantically.

“Don’t be,” Aeon snapped. “It's not your fault.”

“You did everything you could, Hellcat.” I wound my arms around them feeling Aeon doing the same thing.

Katarina cried a gut-wrenching cry.

“Baby, it’s ok.” Lucien kissed her forehead.

“No… No, it's not, we were supposed to live our happily ever after, and grow old together,” she sobbed. “I thought it was going to work, it should have worked, maybe we can?—”

“No,” I said, infusing my voice with Alpha power. “No more, we just need to enjoy the last moments we have with each other.”

“You tried your best and that’s all we could have asked for,” Aeon said, looking at me with red-rimmed eyes.

All this pain was just the beginning.

“My best wasn’t enough,” Katarina whimpered, shifting in Lucien’s embrace.

She looked at me with hope in her eyes, and I knew what she wanted. I shook my head no, because I didn’t think it was the right choice. After all we had been through, I didn’t want to break the bond. It was our last tie to her, and I knew the guys would be upset.

I shook my head again.
