“I didn’t think…”

I didn’t see it in time. Pain exploded in my jaw as I stumbled back.

“You didn’t think to fucking tell us?” Lucien yelled.

“Lucien!” Katarina yelled.

“Don’t do this, Katarina,” he snarled at her.

“Lucien, it’s the only…”

“Fuck this,” he snapped. “I’m not going to stand here and watch the love of my life break apart my bond. I fucking love you with or without the bond, but I can’t watch you do this.”

He walked away from us all, leaving the library.

“I would rather suffer with your bond than act like it never happened,” Aeon said, looking at her, then at me.

He followed Lucien, leaving Katarina and I.

“Dammit!” Katarina screamed.

“Don’t do it, Katarina,” I said, turning towards her.

“But…” she sat down and cried.

“Don’t take away the last piece of you they will have after you leave us,” I said, my throat swelling with emotion.

“I’m just trying to do the right thing.” She swiped the salt, breaking the spell.

“I know,” I said, reaching for her. “You’ve been put in an impossible situation and you’re just trying to do what’s best.”

She isn’t going through with it. Come back.I said through the bond.

“I just don’t want you to suffer after I’m gone.” She wrapped her arms around me resting her forehead on my neck. “I just can’t stand that you could be going crazy. I want you to be free.”

“We will only be free when we are with you again, Katarina,” I said, wrapping my arms around her. “Breaking the bond might help, but we will always feel that emptiness.”

“Even you?” she asked quietly.

I pulled away so that I could see her face.

“Even me, you’ve become so much to me in so little time,” I said, pushing her hair away from her face.

“But not enough,” she stated.

“I…” I didn’t know what to say to that.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.” She tried pushing me away.

“Katarina, loving you would be the easiest thing in the world, it’s just how do you give a part of yourself when you know they might not stay?”

“You don’t, it’s smart, and I think that’s why I've been so hesitant to love you too, I just can’t…”

She didn’t finish her sentence, hiding her face in the crook of my neck holding on to me like this would prevent her from leaving us.

“I’m scared,” she shuddered.

“I know facing death is never easy.” I ran my hand down her back.
