I felt the pull of the curse, it was starting all over again. This was it, the little bit of freedom, the bit of normalcy and the last bit of light was going away. The guys must have felt it too because Aeon yanked her out of Lucien's arms. I didn’t get to hear what he said to her. It was shared in small whispers, but I heard the devastation in Aeon's voice, I also heard the anger in his voice.

“I love you, Aeon, your visions, your wisdom and your loyalty. You’ve believed in my ability and instead of tossing me aside and you let me have a voice.”

“Kitten.” Aeon's voice was hoarse.

He buried his face into her neck saying something I couldn’t make out.

“I know, I wish we had more time too.”

The curse tugged at me one more time, intensifying the anxious feeling I had already been experiencing. I wanted to yank her out of his grasp, I wanted to run away with her, so the spell didn’t take her. I wanted to sell my soul so that she could live, even if it meant giving my life for hers.

I felt helpless, just like when I watched my family die, when I watched my pack suffer at my mistake and now, I had to watch my mate being taken away too. Lost in my thoughts, I didn’t see Katarina moving towards me. Her small hands cupped my face.

“I… I love you.” She sounded breathless, pulling me closer. “Please take care of them.”

I laid a hand on her stomach, wondering what life would have been like with a little girl running round.

“I will,” I whispered against her lips. “Katarina.”

I felt an even stronger tug, her breath coming in shallow pants.

“I’m so fucking scared,” she whimpered.

“We are here,” we said together, surrounding her.

Katarina’s violet eyes grew misty, her body trembled. Panic and fear flooded my system. This was it, this was my last moment with her and I realized my mistake. I should have kissed her from the moment we were mated, I should have told her I loved her, she deserved everything, even my heart.

I leaned down pressing my lips against hers.

“I love you, Katarina. Today, tomorrow and into the afterlife.”

I pressed my lips against hers, feeling her lips firm against mine until she went limp in my arms, and she was gone.

AEON

When Mr. Potter found me, the weight of disappointment hit me so hard that I had to calm myself from having a breakdown. I was so close to losing my emotions when Lucien and Zev found me, and Katarina wasn’t with them. I knew we didn’t have much time left together.

It didn’t take long for us to find her whimpering, looking broken under some debris. She cried out, breaking my heart in the process. I truly believed the world could be cruel to us, but not her. Katarina didn’t deserve to die, her hard work, her suffering should have been enough, but the world didn’t care if she was a good person or not.

Then she did something I did not expect. She wanted to break the bond. If she hadn’t put up a barrier to keep us out, I would have thought she was joking but the determination in her eyes showed me all I needed to know.

Lucien reacted strongly, punching Zev before leaving the library. I was mad and as much as I wanted to stay here, I knew I needed to bring Lucien back. We didn’t have much time with her; we couldn’t spend the last moments away from her.

After finding Lucien, he broke down, crushing my heart even more. Zev told us to come back, but Lucien didn’t want to be there. He cried in my arms, as I tried to soothe him as much as possible.

“Why?” He kept questioning.

I had no answer for him as we held each other waiting for the moment the bond was broken, but it never came, and the ominous chime of the clock came back to haunt us.

That's when Zev told us to come back again. Reluctantly, we obeyed, but before I walked into the house, I felt uneasy. Looking around, I didn’t see anything, but I was positive that someone was near the perimeter. Caston was waiting in the shadows, I knew he was itching to get his hands on Katarina.

They couldn’t get in and the joke was on them because with Katarina’s sacrifice, we knew it would reinforce the curse. It seemed Caston and the pack were destined to lose Katarina. We barely made it in time and Lucien said his goodbye first.

I grabbed her.

“Thank you for not breaking the bond,” I whispered. “I think that would have been worse and ruined our last moments.”
