“I’m so sorry,” she cried. “I was just trying to make things easier.”

“I know,” I said, because I really did. Katarina wasn’t malicious, she was always thinking of us even when we treated her awfully. “I just wish we had had more time. I love you, Kitten, today, tomorrow and into the fucking afterlife. Our love doesn’t end here. I told you, death will not keep us apart.”

“I wish we had more time too,” she shuddered. “I love you, Aeon, and I’ll be waiting for you, making sure you keep your promise because this isn’t the end.”

We kissed as I choked back a sob. Our tears made our kiss salty, but I didn’t care. I needed her like my next fucking breath and just thinking about living the rest of my life without her hurtlike hell. She was panting when we pulled away and the tug of the spell was sharper than ever. I dreaded going back to being awake for only one hour of the day, the endless nights, and a world where I lived and Katarina didn’t.

She climbed off of me to go to Zev, my tears began coming down quicker as Lucien held me. I kissed his forehead, seeing him just as ravaged as I was. He held on to me tightly until Katarina said she was so fucking scared.

My heart broke for us, but knowing death was on her doorstep, I couldn’t imagine what Katarina was going through. We wrapped our arms around them, and I heard the words I never thought I would hear from Zev.

Lucien

“I love you Katarina.Today, tomorrow and into the afterlife.”

Zev’s voice was full of love, almost as if he found peace in her death. I looked at him, seeing him kiss Katarina right before she went limp into his arms, in our arms. She looked peaceful. For a moment I let myself believe she was asleep and tomorrow we would wake up with all of this being just a horrible nightmare.

Agony like I had never felt before ripped through me. Losing my family didn’t bring out this response, but losing Katarina felt like I was dying, a piece of something vital was being ripped from me. A sob broke free from me as the intensity of losing her assaulted me.

I pulled away as the curse called to me intensely.

“Fuck!!!” I roared.

I wanted to hit something, kill something, go back in time to wring Thane’s neck, or rip him apart. The need for violence wasoverwhelming, but I knew it was the curse coming back in full force.

Zev and Aeon stepped away from her when a blast of power hit us. I grunted from the force as I was thrown back. I hit the floor with a sickening thud as the pain intensified. I clenched my teeth as every piece of my body felt like it was being ripped apart.

I heard Aeon yell and Zev snarl. It was so intense my vision became blurred, and I yelled at the pain. Then I heard her scream. I didn’t know if I was imagining it, or if it was actually her, but I opened my eyes to see her suspended in the air with her arms out and her head thrown back. Another blast of power hit me as the last thing I saw was Katarina falling before being engulfed by the oblivion.

My head was throbbing,my ears popped, and the sound of groans and grunts pulled me from the darkness. Blinking a few times, my vision cleared, rolling over on my hands and knees.

“Katarina!” Zev yelled.

The agony in his voice had me kneeling up quickly, looking for them. I got up on shaky legs but the first thing I noticed was my magic. It was back at full force with something else, something stronger than my own. It was then that I noticed my wolf was at peace, the lingering sensation of the curse was no longer there. We were free.

I clenched my jaw with an overwhelming need to cry.

“Kitten, wake up, my love.” Aeon's voice was more worried.

I walked closer to them, they both looked up at me and I knew the worst had happened. We were free and her life was the ultimate sacrifice. I fell onto my knees as the emotions bubbledup. She died saving us, and I didn’t know how she ended up breaking the curse.

“No, Katarina, please open your eyes,” Zev pleaded. “Come on, Hellcat, this wasn’t supposed to happen. We were supposed to be free with you.”

A tear fell down his cheek into his beard. He looked ruined holding on to her body, his hand on her stomach possessively.

“Kitten.” Aeon’s voice broke. “Today, tomorrow and into the afterlife.”

Aeon grabbed her hand as a ball of emotion formed in my throat.

This couldn’t be the end. I would rather be cursed than live free without her.

That’s when it clicked. The vial.I took it out quickly, but it had cracked and just a few drops lingered inside.

Something was better than nothing, I uncorked it while kneeling by her. I touched Zev’s shoulder, so he would look up at me. I held up the vial.

“She said this was her pass Hail Mary.” I put it up against her lips.

“Wait!” Zev yelled. “What about the baby?”
