Thane was the spitting image of Caston, making me want to throw up from the thought. Their family had been trying to take control from our family for a long time now. I didn't know what we had done to them to make them think they should do this to us. This is why Caston fought tooth and nail for me; why he thought he had this fucking claim on me.

I fell on the floor, feeling like my chest was getting ready to explode. These past few weeks, it seemed like life was intent on making me question everything in my life.

Was this the reason that man had said you had to keep your enemies close? Was that the excuse my father had, when he allowed me to marry that asshole? Anger coursed through me, thinking I had to suffer because he wanted to keep an eye on that piece of shit. I sat down with my head in my hands wondering what else my father had done. It seemed he was entirely fine with allowing me to suffer and let me trudge through life thinking everything was my fault.

The sound of chanting brought me out of my downward spiral. The forest was significantly darker, taking me a moment to find Vivienne again. She was in the middle of the circle, her hands in the air as magic swirled all around her.The spell was beautiful. It glowed bright showing the ruins, the crystals and her chalice.

Lightning struck close by with a loud boom from thunder. The wind picked up, swaying the trees violently. Her chanting became lighter, she sliced her hand, slashing blood on the circle and lightning struck again.

That’s when more people started showing up. A bunch of people walked around the circle she made, with Thane walking right in front of Vivienne. I saw the moment she noticed him, her eyes widened, and a smile crossed her lips. She stopped chanting and the spell slowly started to recede, but the people around the circle took up the chant.

They held their hands up, the magic restarting and Vivienne realized she was being played. They were using her spell and magic, increasing it tenfold. Thane broke away from the circle walking toward Vivienne, looking so much like Caston that I had to look away.

“Was anything real?” she yelled.

The look on her face was heartbreaking.

“Of course, real enough to get you to do what I needed you to,” he smirked at her.

Her lip trembled. “All for power?”

“Always, love, what else is there?” He walked up to her, standing over her so that she had to look up at him. “You are a means to an end.”

“They don’t deserve this,” she snarled.

“They do. Their stupid treaty took you away. You were supposed to be mine and they decided to offer you to those animals.” He was livid, reminding me of Caston’s behavior way too much. The entitlement was bleeding off him and I had always hated his family's pompous attitudes.

The chanting grew even louder, magic permeated the air in a thick blanket, and I knew the spell was almost done. Viviennelooked around the circle, the gears in her mind working but I didn’t see a way she could break the spell. I knew she didn’t either.

“You can’t stop it, Vivienne.” Thane looked manic. “This spell will keep them locked in their stupid castle and their magic will be ours.”

“You’re stripping them of their magic?” She asked in disbelief.

“No, they will be our endless source of magic while they are trapped there. How else are we supposed to take over the Belladonnas?”

Vivienne’s nostrils flared in anger, looking around again still searching for a solution. Her face softened as a small smirk danced on her lip when she looked at Thane.

“I think you seriously underestimated me, Thane,” she said in a calm voice.

He laughed maniacally. Thane was seriously deranged.

“You’re just pathetic and weak, Vivienne.” He smirked at her.

I didn’t notice it in time, she lifted the knife, chanting something quickly before stabbing herself.

“No!” I yelled racing to her.

Thane wasn’t quick enough to stop it from happening. She continued chanting until a blast of magic threw everyone back. I fell to my knees when I reached her as much as I wanted to touch her, I couldn’t.

“You stupid child!” Thane snarled getting up. “What did you do!?”

He pulled her up from the front of her dress.

“I just put a divot in your plan,” she laughed, coughing blood. “I gave them a way out and you won’t get an ounce of power.”

Thane quickly looked around frantically as he tried to figure out what she had done.

“No!” he yelled. “Undo it.”
