J.D. just smiled. "Mine," he mouthed, glancing over at Tanner and then back to me.

"Ours," I mouthed back.

"Yeah," he agreed. "Ours."

Chapter43

The next morning,I woke to the ringing of a phone. Tanner, being on the side with the chargers, groaned as he sat up to check. He groaned again before unplugging one and holding it out even as he flopped back down.

"J.D., it's Max," he grumbled, his croaky morning voice so cute.

J.D. quickly took the phone and swiped. "Max?" he asked. "This had best be good because I got a whole lot of sexy in my bed."

Then J.D.'s eyes jumped wide open. A moment later, he sat up, grunting at the pain of such a sudden movement. Not letting that stop him, J.D. swiped at his phone and started tapping. Immediately, Max's voice spilled out.

"...Just so you know."

"Say that again," J.D. demanded. "I got Cody and Tanner beside me and you're on speaker."

Max sighed, the sound heavy on the line. "A few hours ago, Grace told me she was contacted by a news station. Half an hour ago, I had a journalist call me for a statement."

"Statement about what?" I asked.

"J.D. Adkins being gay," he said. "Tillman doesn't know yet, or any of the sponsors, but they will. J.D. what am I supposed to tell them?"

"No, tell them the rest," J.D. insisted.

"Grace said they asked about Tanner Burns," Max mumbled, sounding embarrassed.

"The fuck?" Tanner asked, suddenly very awake.

"Max knows," J.D. told him. "I trust the guy, and I was kinda braggin'. So yeah, he knows, but he ain't gonna out ya."

"Someone fucking did!" Tanner snapped before throwing off the blankets.

"Why is Grace involved?" I asked. "She'smyrep."

"Because you," Max said, "are Tanner's girlfriend. There were questions about cheating, breaking up, and those sorts of things."

"Jesus Christ," Tanner grumbled from the far side of the room where he was pulling on his underwear. "And here? At my home show? Fuck! I have to talk to the guys."

"I need to tell Dad," I said. "He wouldn't say anything, would he?"

"Someone did!" Tanner shot back.

J.D. snapped and pointed at him. "Don't you start acting like a little bitch until we know shit. Yeah, someone did, but if you think it was Dean, you're a dumb fuck."

"But Dad's not good at this stuff," I said, trying to get to my phone and finding the turning-and-reaching awkward.

I couldn't lay on my bad arm. I couldn't really push up partway. Giving in, I just sat up and grabbed it, pulling until the charger came out. Then, I started texting. It wasn't easy with one hand, but I needed to know my daddy hadn't done this. He had to know how bad it would be, right? And yet, I hadn't really spelled it out for him.

Fuck! This was going to be bad.

"How are we playing this?" I asked as I sent off the text to my father.

"What?" J.D. asked.

"What story are we giving the press?" Max clarified from the phone.
