The smile she gives me simultaneously warms my chest and squeezes it.

The little things that we all take for granted are the things that bring her the greatest joy and happiness.

We talk about random things as we finish lunch. Mae polished off three-quarters of her plate and asked if she could have a small bowl of oatmeal which Mama Astrid happily made for her.

Glancing at Mama Astrid, she nods and I finish off what was left on Mae’s plate. One, I know she’s still pissed at me but I wasn’t going to eat it without asking since I’m still being punished by her, but on the other hand, neither of us like wasting food either.

That said though, none of us had the heart to deny Mae her treat.

Sunshine insists on helping Mama Astrid clean up from lunch and takes our empty dishes into the kitchen.

“I’m going to love beating her stepfather when we get our hands on him,” Devil seethes as he clenches and unclenches his fists.

“Agreed, but you’re going to have to get in line,” I reply, my voice hard and cold.

The others give me a chin lift. Smoke and I share a look. That fucker’s going to regret ever laying hands on Mae.

About twenty minutes later, Reaper stands up, his chair sliding on the tile. “Time to go talk to our guests.”

Standing, I tilt my head toward the kitchen. “I’ll talk to Mae,” I tell them and follow after her.

Once in the kitchen, I step up behind Sunshine and gently wrap my arms around her waist.

“Need to talk to you about something, Mae. Are you almost finished in here?”

She turns in my arms, wrapping her arms around my waist. Mama Astrid slips out of the kitchen, giving us privacy.

“We just finished.”

Leaning down, I give her a chaste kiss before pulling back.

“We’re going downstairs to have a talk and we wanted to ask you if you wanted to be there? You can say no, obviously, but if you wanted to ask them something or join in, you can.”

She stares up at me in shock before her face hardens and she nods. “I want to be down there. To find out the real reasons why they took me and did this to me. I also want to join in.” She pauses, looking away before her gaze returns to mine hesitantly. “I hope you won’t be mad, but I also talked to Sasha and Levi. Sasha got me something that I want to give them. If that’s okay, that is.”

I can’t help my grin. Seems like my little ray of sunshine also has some darkness in her. “More than okay, baby. However, if it ever gets too much, say the word and I’ll get you out of there. Okay?”

“I understand.”

Taking her hand, I lead her out into the main room and down to the cellar.

At the door, I pause, looking back at her. “Ready?”

She takes a deep breath, squares her shoulders and raises her chin. It’s like a switch has been flipped in her. Fuck, seeing her like this has me ready to take her again, but we need to get more information from these fuckers.

“Ready.”

Damn, am I proud of her for this. Punching in my code, I open the door.

Carter, Andrew, and also Luscious are now hanging from their wrists from the ceiling with their toes just barely touching the ground and their ankles are chained to the ground. The gunshot wounds Carter and Andrew received are patched up just enough so that they won’t bleed to death, but I know from past experience that the bullets are still imbedded inside. All three still have their clothes on.

My brothers step aside to let us through.

As soon as Carter sees Mae at my side, my arm around her waist, he starts thrashing against his restraints. “Get your hands off her! She’s mine!”

Ignoring him, Sasha grins darkly when she sees Mae, and I’m surprised to see the same expression mirrored on Mae’s face.

“So, per the plan?” Sasha asks her.
