“Possibly. Though I would like to say, to my knowledge, she hasn’t taken a pregnancy test. Smoke was pulling my leg about babies when I realized Mae should have had her period two weeks ago.”

“Fuck,” Levi, Reaper, Punisher, Axe and Odin all say at the same time.

“Patch and Doc, you definitely need to go with them as a just in case,” Levi tells them. “I can watch over this stubborn ass to make sure he doesn’t overdo anything.”

Smoke narrows his eyes at her, taking in her fresh bandages. “And who will be making sureyoudon’t overdo things?”

“Oh, shut up. Let’s get back to planning so we can bring our girl back home,” Levi sasses him back.

It’s a little after 6 am when we pull up into the driveway of an abandoned, run down field that’s on the backside of the Cooke estate.

We’ve split up into two teams. The larger group is heading toward the house because as of our check-in a few minutes ago, Preston, X, Gigi, four thugs and an unknown woman are at the main house. Bruce wasn’t seen on cameras and I worry that means he’s with Mae or on his way there.

We’ve all got cameras clipped onto us just in case we come up to an obstacle that Smoke might need to walk us through. Though that will most likely be the house crew more so than us since they’re planning on entering via an old servant’s entrance.

Punisher, Judge, Tripp, Axe, Drae, and I sneak our way through the thick grouping of trees when the sounds of struggling and metal on metal sounds reach our ears.

Drae and I damn near launch forward, but Punisher holds us both back, pointing to the house. A guard is pacing by the window, holding a gun in his hand.

When he turns his back, we dart to the far side of the garrison-like building and find that the door’s been left slightly ajar. Double-checking the window, I nudge the door open a little wider, relieved when it doesn’t squeak.

The shuffling sound increases, but I force myself to stay calm.

Hang on, Sunshine.

Just as I’m about to step inside, I hear something I wasn’t expecting.

My ankles and wrists are a bloody mess, but I don’t care.

I’m free.

And so is Lindsey.

Well, free as in our shackles are no longer secured to the wall, floor, or pipe. They’re still attached to our bodies, unfortunately.

I’d just gotten done singing another song for Lindsey when I notice she’s finally pooped out.

Once she had gotten her chains free, I had her brush any cinder block dust off her little mat and carefully slide the bolts back in place.

The look she gave me when I told her to do that damn near broke me, but it needed to be done. Especially after her telling me what she’d seen and who had hurt our mothers. I hope she hadn’t left anything out but the fact that she said there was nothing sexual going on in front of her gives me hope. Unless she just isn’t telling me about it. God, I pray that isn’t the case.

“If they come in and check on you when you’re asleep, everything needs to look like you’re still their captive. Only you and I will know the truth.”

“But can’t I cover up Mama and your mama?”

My throat burns with unshed tears at her words. “When I give you the signal, you can cover them, okay?”

“Okay,” she grumbles, but does as I ask.

“Can you sing me a song, Mae?”

“Of course, Pumpkin, so long as I know it.”

“Do you know‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’from the movie Encanto?”

I definitely know that one. One of the other ladies at the diner would sometimes have to bring in her daughter if she didn’t have a babysitter. Her daughter loved Disney movies and would regularly play Encanto.

Grinning, I start singing.
