Feeling numb all over, I can only nod.

Doc and Patch just finished fixing Sunshine up. The damage this time around was worse than before, way worse, and Doc convinced Mae to allow him to sedate her when she couldn’t keep still.

It’s a little after noon and I’m tired as fuck, but I can’t sleep.

Pulling out my phone, I text Punisher, seeing if he’ll come up here to sit with her for a few minutes so I can step out to get some coffee and maybe some food.

Seconds later, the door cracks open and he steps in. “I didn’t want to knock in case she’d just gone to sleep.”

I shake my head. “She couldn’t stay still with the extent of the damage. Doc ended up sedating her.”

His eyebrows raise in shock. “Wow, I’m surprised she let him after last time.”

I nod and scrub a hand over my face. “Same, but he said they’d have a better chance of lessening the scaring if she didn’t move, so she finally gave in.” Sighing, I look back over at her. “Like before, don’t rest your hand on hers. I’m just gonna grab a cup of coffee and I’ll be back up.”

“Can you grab me one, too?” Smoke asks from the cot.

“Yeah. Unless you need help getting up right now?”

He waves me off. “I need to take a pill before I attempt that. This shit didn’t used to keep me down like this before.”

“That’s cause you’re old, old man,” Punisher teases him.

The fact that Smoke just flips him off is telling enough for both of us. Fucker’s hurting big time.

“I’ll get you a water and a coffee, just please don’t do anything that will wake her up. Doc only just got done maybe fifteen minutes ago.”

Smoke glances at his watch and then up at her on the bed.

“Fuck...” he hisses.

Yeah, it’s been a long a fucking night, not to mention they didn’t get started on Mae’s back until around 7:30 this morning.

Closing the door behind me, I head downstairs, surprised to see Lindsey and Drae up. He looks up and then looks down, his face riddled with guilt.

Good.

Fucker messed with my woman’s head with his shit.

Lindsey hops down out of her chair and I scoop her up as she comes running over to me. “Is Mae awake yet?”

I shake my head. “No, honey. Doc just got done working on her back, wrists, and ankles not too long ago. He had to sedate her because of the damage, so she’ll be sleeping for a while longer yet.”

Drae stands and when she reaches for him, I pass her over.

Her face falls at my words. “Oh. Well, when she’s feeling better, can I see her? I want to sing to her like she did for me this morning.”

Drae gives a strangled noise and I cock an eyebrow at him. I won’t glare at him in front of her or chew him out, but it will be happening.

“Pumpkin, how about you finish your lunch? I’m just going to talk to Timber for a moment.”

She freezes in his arms and tightens her fists on his shirt. “I’ll still be able to see you, though, right?”

“Absolutely. We’re going to head into the kitchen for a bit of privacy, but you’ll be able to see me through the pass-through.”

“Is this about the mean look you gave her this morning?”

Drae freezes this time and I bite my cheek to keep from smirking as I see his cheeks and ears turn a little pink. “Yes, baby, it is. I need to apologize. I’d just learned what all you’d witnessed and I thought she knew without saying something first.”
