“Alright, I will talk to Jewel and see if she doesn’t have any plans.”

“Alright, I will be expecting you guys.” She now sounds elated.

After I end the call with my mother, I pick up my coat and head out. By the time I step outside my driver already brought the car around.

We stop by the store and get her favorite strawberry ice cream as she had requested.

When I step into my living room, I’m welcomed by a burning smell, I place my laptop bag on a couch as I follow the source of the smell to the kitchen.

Jewel is standing by the stove staring at a pot with its contents burnt in it. She looks frustrated, her hair tied in a messy bun, with a few escaping and plastered against her sweaty forehead and sides of her face. She looks so cute I want to kiss her.

“Oh, you’re back,” she says with her hand to her mouth when she turns and sees me. She looks embarrassed.

“What’s going on here,Mischief?” I ask using the nickname I gave her when we were much younger because she was always fond of causing mischief.

I walk deeper into the kitchen closing the distance between us taking in the messy state of the kitchen.

“I was trying to make us dinner,” she mutters biting down at her bottom lip, something she does when she’s either nervous or embarrassed. And I can tell she’s embarrassed with the way she’s averting my gaze.

“Where’s Maria?” I ask referring to my cook.

“I gave her the day off. I thought I should make us some Burrito soup, my grandmother used to make it for me when I was little. But I ended up getting it burnt…” Her voice trails off as she looks at me. “I’m sorry.”

I bring my finger under her chin, brushing the pad of my thumb across her skin. “Are you hurt in any way?”

“Aside from my bruised ego, no.”

We both chuckle and before I can stop myself, I dip my head and kiss her on her lips. She tastes like spices and I take everything she has to offer as she opens for me and brings her hand to my hair, her finger weaving through it, gently tugging.

We are both kissing each other hungrily like we’ve been waiting to do this for a long time ago. I bring my hands to her legs and hoist her against myself and she wraps her legs around my waist, our lips still locked.

I place her on the kitchen island and start kissing her neck, savoring her sweaty skin. My hands glide under her dress, caressing her thighs. Jewel throws her head back a soft moan making its way out of her lips.

I have my fingers on her lace panty about to slip it down her legs when her phone starts to ring. Just as quickly as it began, the spell is broken, and we both pull apart.

Jewel’s skin is flushed as we both stare at each other wondering what just happened. She’s the first to snap out of the daze as she reaches for her phone which is still ringing, grabs it, and dashes out of the kitchen.

Chapter 7

Jewel

A few hours later

The evening's kiss with Kyle lingers in my thoughts, haunting me like a sweet, forbidden dream. I can't deny the yearning that's taken root within me. As I lay in bed, I replay the sensations of his lips against mine, the electricity that surged between us. It was like a dam had broken, and I couldn't help but crave more of his touch.

I had always known there was something between us, a connection that went beyond friendship. Yet, we had entered into this fake marriage with an agreement, and my heart had stayed safely locked away. But now, the walls I'd carefully constructed are crumbling, and I can't ignore the desire that simmers beneath the surface.

If Jasmine had not called when she did, we would have probably gone further than just kissing, and I probably wanted it.

I keep tossing and turning on my bed unable to get any sleep. I turn staring at my bedroom ceiling. What is wrong with me? This isn’t supposed to be a real marriage, I’m not supposed to have feelings for Kyle.

I think of going to his bedroom to have a talk with him about it, but I quickly decide against it. That won’t be a good idea. What am I supposed to say to him? That the kiss didn’t mean a thing to me and it was a mistake? That’s a lie even I would not be able to pull off.

I get out of my bed with a huff strip out of my clothes and get into the shower hoping the warm water will help me relax.

As I wash my hair, a smile curls up my lips when I remember Kyle’s reaction when he found out that I had burnt dinner. I had expected him to be mad or something especially the state the kitchen was in when he walked in.

But I was surprised when he asked if I was okay. I guess I’m so used to being scolded for everything I did wrong that I had expected Kyle to do the same.
