I shake my head laughing not denying or confirming their statement.

“You aren’t making any effort to deny it, so does that mean that you’re truly in love?” Mike asks nudging my arm with his.

I shrug, wondering if I should talk about my feelings for Jewel with my friends, knowing them very well, I know that they will taunt me about it. As I’ve always been anti-love.

“So, tell us how a guy who has always been anti-marriage, ends up not only getting married but also falling in love.”

I turn to look at Jake as he speaks and decide that it would best just to pretend that I’m not in love with Jewel.

“What makes you think that I’m in love?”

“Aren’t you?” Emily asks. “We see your pictures with her on blogs and social media all the time. And last week you had one of the popular artistes in L.A hang a picture of her in his art exhibition.”

I shrug, taking a sip of my drink and then proceeding to pour more for myself. “And how does that translate into being in love?”

Jake leans back in his chair, an arm draped around Emily’s shoulders, and she leans in placing her head on his arm.

I know Emily has a thing for Jake but the love has always been unrequited, have they started dating now? What did I miss, these past weeks that I’ve not hung out with them?

“Are you denying being in love with your wife?” Jake asks, his eyes on me. It’s as if he doesn’t believe me and is trying to get me to confess my true feelings.

“There’s nothing to deny, I don’t love Jewel, we are both doing whatever we are doing just to make our parents think that we are in love so we can get what we want and then go our separate ways.”

A voice inside my head is screaming for me to stop telling lies and say the truth, but I ignore it. A little white lie has never hurt anyone.

Emily now looks a little disappointed as she stares at me. “Hmm, that certainly wasn’t the vibe that I was getting from you both when I saw you together.”

“Yea, me too.”

We all turn around to see the source of the voice and I feel air being knocked out of my lungs when I see Jewel standing at the entrance staring at me, her eyes misty with unshed tears.

“Jewel…” I trail off when I can’t seem to find the right word to say. What is she doing here? Did she hear what I just said about not loving her to my friends?

Of course, she did, you idiot.

There’s a moment of silence as we all can’t seem to find the right word to say. “Please don’t stop on my behalf, I will just leave.”

Jewel turns around and starts walking away, I quickly get out of my seat and go after her.

“Mischief,please wait…”

“Don’t you dare call me that!” She spins around facing me, her cheeks stained with tears and her eyes burning with anger.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything that I said back there, I was just…”

“You were just trying to let your friends know that I’m nothing but a means to an end.”

“No, that wasn’t what I said, I didn’t…”

“You didn’t have to say it. Even a fool knows that’s what you were talking about. And I’m the biggest fool for thinking that what we had meant more to you, or that we had anything at all.”

She turns around and starts walking away, and I try to stop her. “Please Kyle, let’s not create a scene, we don’t want people takingpictures and then ruin the perfect facade we’ve created as the perfect and happy couple, now do we?”

“I don’t care what people think, please just hear me out.”

“Well, I do!” She grits out, and I can tell that she’s struggling to contain her anger. “Please…” she sounds broken.

I let go off her arm and watch as she descends the stairs. I pull my fingers through my hair cussing under my breath. What have I done? What was I thinking talking about her like that to my friends? How could I have been so stupid?
