“By doing a background check? Where did the clarity and certainty go?”

“You are taking it too personally,” Ella retorted while breathing heavily, “Is everything all right?”

Everything wasn’t all right, dammit, I thought.

She was correct. I was taking it too personally, mainly because Mason had done the same thing, and just last night, I had sex with him. And with him mentioning Tennessee, it felt like he was digging deeper to find everything about my life.

The worst part was that my stupid heart was beginning to like him in a profound, sensual way, and it made me wary and more frustrated than I have ever been in my entire life.

“No,” I replied, shaking my head, and turning towards Ella, who still looked worried. “I was worried the man might notice you are tailing him and will eventually destroy your little effort in securing your relationship with him.”

“Oh my,” Ella muttered and quickly rushed towards me for a hug. “You are such an amazing friend.” She continued as she held me tightly while shaking me.

“If this falls from my hand,” I whispered while laughing. “You sure know there won’t be a drawing taking place?”

“All right,” Ella said and pulled away while removing the strands of hair covering her eyes. “You are no fun.” She added and patted my arms softly.

“You are welcome,” I muttered and continued my walk toward the study, with Ella following me while whistling.

We reached the study, opened the door, got inside, and I headed toward the table to keep the toolbox and set up the canvas.

“What if Mason is interested in you?”

I sighed, turned to Ella, and shook my head. “I thought we were done with this conversation?”

“I know, I know.” She said, touching her heart, “I was just thinking he left the party early, and we didn’t see him again.”

“And?” I asked, looking away from her while concentrating on setting up the canvas so she wouldn’t notice how nervous I was getting.

“He saw how you looked and was so thrown away by your beauty he had to sit back or leave the room and reminisce on how bad he treated you.”

I started laughing then while holding my stomach. “This is easily the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a while.”

“It’s not funny,” Ella said. “He just disappears, and in the morning, he becomes all good and nice, even making you call him by his name. Surely something is amiss, and I am perfectly sure he must have regretted treating you the way he did earlier.”

“I think you should feature in a movie or probably write one yourself. Your outstanding brain and the ideas coming from it amaze me.”

“That’s your problem, sweetheart. You never think things through deeply, I mean,” she said, stretching her hands apart, “have a broader view of things.”

“There’s no broader view here.” I stepped back a bit to view how good the canvas was. “Your mind is playing tricks on you, and I bet you’re supposed to be more worried about making Phil yours. He’s handsome. I bet many ladies will want to take him.”

“I hate competitions.” She shrugged as she reached the couch and sat on it. “They can have him for all I care.”

“Ella? Is that you,” I asked with a chuckle. “The Ella I know loves competitions. Is that defeat I hear in your voice already?” I asked as I moved toward her and grabbed her by the arms while giggling.

She started laughing as I tickled her side. “Stop, stop.” She shouted while laughing as I continued to tickle her.

“Seems you two are already enjoying yourselves without me.” Ella’s mother said, and we immediately broke apart while still laughing to turn toward Eve, who was already dressed in an outfit meant for royalty, which had been brought to the house for her portrait.

“God, you look amazing, Mom,” Ella said as she stood and began to walk closer to her mother, who spread her arms and began to turn around. “You look like a queen.”

Eve turned towards her and touched her cheeks gently. “I do?”

Ella nodded and gave her a thumbs up. “Certainly do. Come on,” Ella said and held her hand while moving her towards where she would stand.

“You look splendid, ma’am,” I told her, unable to stop myself from admiring the clothing. “It looks like it was made specifically for you.”

“Oh please, you guys don’t seem to know how to stop flattering me. I am getting chills all over,” Eve chuckled and took her position. “Lucy, please tell me the best position I should be in because neither I nor my sweet angel has an idea of what we are doing.”
