Mason looked a little hurt but nodded his head in agreement. Just then, we arrived at my room, and he opened the door.

“Wow, you guys are full of surprises. This room is amazing.”

Mason smiled as he reached out to help me out of the wheelchair. He took both of my hands and then put his arms around my waist again to hold me steady.

He helped me walk over to the bed and get into it.

“Sleep now. I promise to do as you say.”

Smiling, I snuggled into the heavenly pillows and blankets, and closed my eyes, “Thank you.”

For a moment, I wished this would be forever, me nestled close to his warmth, but just like everything, I knew this would end, too. And that I should enjoy it as much as I could while it lasted. Because soon, everything was going to change.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

MASONBLACKWOOD

I woke with a start, sat up from the bed, and covered my face with my palms while breathing heavily.

I had dreamt of my child being taken from me with my hands cuffed to a bed. It was a nightmare, and it felt so real. I sighed and looked around the room, trying to decipher what the dream meant but to no avail.

I stood from the bed and headed toward the bathroom. Inside, I washed my face and looked at my reflection in the mirror, trying to know if I could see the face of the person dragging her away.

I wasn’t superstitious, but I hadn’t had a dream like that before about anyone who moved my heart the way Lucy did—much less of a woman who had ever been pregnant because of me. I bent my head, scooped more water, and washed my face.

I looked at my arm and remembered how she had nestled against me. For those brief moments, it felt like someone was handing herself over to me without any boundaries, and I loved every bit of it and wished it never ended.

Filled with an intense urgency to know how she was, I took a quick shower, freshened up, and hurried through my clothes while, at the same time, working through my mind on how to proceed in giving Lucy the maximum care she needed.

I checked my watch. It was still six in the morning, yet I felt this intense urge to be with Lucy in her room.

I left my room and headed straight to the VIP suite.

Luckily, it was just a few steps down the hall. I dug my hands in my pants, trying to control myself and not run towards the door, just as my body wanted to. I might be developing feelings for her, but I still must maintain some decency.

I was just about to reach the door when it opened, and Ella came out, yawning. She paused midway as she saw me moving close to her.

Smiling, I moved toward her and stopped. “Oh, I was just going to see how Lucy was feeling. Did you stay with her all night? I hope there were no issues at all,” I asked, looking at the door.

I saw her surprised expression and tried hard to keep my face as neutral as possible.

“You have something on your face. Here, let me remove that.” I reached forward and removed the feather on her cheek. “There you go.”

Ella stepped backward, looked at my hands, and then at my face. “Are you sick?”

“What?”

She reached out her hand and touched my neck. “Your temperature is okay? But you are not okay.”

“Come on, sister, can’t a loving brother ask about his sister’s well-being every now and then?” I didn’t feel the usual sense of annoyance when looking at my sister. Even though she is not yet aware, when she is caring for Lucy, she is also caring for my baby, her niece, or nephew. Maybe that made me soften my tone with her a little bit, after all.

My words shocked her more as she stepped to the side and grabbed her heart. Immediately she rushed forward, grabbed me by the neck, and held me tightly, “Who are you, and what did you do to my brother?”

“Fuck.” I cursed as I held her hand and tried to push her away, but she held me so tightly I struggled to catch my breath.

“Speak now.” She cried and tightened her hold with such strength I didn’t know she possessed.

I grabbed her arm tightly and found a way to push her away. My sister tried to grab for me again, but I found a way to sidestep and raise my hands.
