"You bitch!" A humming sound assaults my ears, and then a thud and silence. I run toward the car with a drowsy Niro in my arms.

My feet are shaking when I reach the black car, fumbling for the right key to unlock the door in my hand.

Sweat drips down my back when I finally get Niro inside the back seat. I want to go home.

Ciro walks to the driver's side, and I look up. "Get in, let's get out of here."

When we reach the docks, the waves are the only sound besides the humming of the powerful gas engine. The sky is pitch black, and the smell has me crinkling my nose. It smells like rotted fish and the ocean.

Ciro opens the door and jumps out. "Come on."

When we get safely on the boat, and it pulls out to sea toward the island, I glance at Ciro. "What happened?"

"You heard Sarah, and I did what Kill would have done."

"Blair–"

"Is dead."

"Kill–"

"Yes, Lillith. Ethan and Blair were a threat. They were all in on it. It was like they were waiting for you to appear. Since Kill didn't tell anyone on the island about you supposedly dying when you jumped off, they assumed he had you hidden somewhere. It is the only thing that would make sense. Then Ethan conveniently showed up and put the pieces together."

"Have you heard from Killian?" I ask.

I need to know he’s safe. I watch Ciro turn to the screen, trying to call him, but it keeps saying no signal.

"I can't get through," he says frustratingly.

Fear claws my insides. I check on Niro, and he's sound asleep. The boat cuts through the dark waters of the ocean. Looking at the screen, I watch the speed and glance at Ciro.

"I don't want to increase the speed and drain the power just in case. We have enough but didn't have time to charge the boats, and sunlight is hours away."

I nod. He's right, and it makes perfect sense. All we can do is wait until we can get there.

"It's alright, Lillith. He's alright. Kill…he loves you too much to die. He wanted to make sure he had an alibi."

I was afraid of that, but I don't trust my father. He's manipulative. He doesn't want anyone to know he's broke. My father would kill anyone to save himself.

When we reach the dock on the island, it's dark. You can't see the lights that usually line the docks, which tells me something is wrong.

"Why is it so dark?" I ask, looking at Ciro holding a sleeping Niro.

"I don't know."

I move to take Niro, and something hard pushes against my head, causing me to freeze. "I wouldn't do that if I were you." A cold chill runs down my arm, snaking itself in my chest.

"Let her and the child go," Ciro demands, moving forward, but the metal weapon digs into the side of my head.

"At first, when I didn't see him parading around with his new wife, I figured she already folded and gave him a child, so he killed her, but when I found out she is indeed Pyralis”––he sucks his teeth––"that made it more interesting."

"Father, stop it. Where's Killian?"

"I'm afraid your time has run out, Lillith. Your husband is a bit indisposed at the moment. You see, I came to finish the job." He pushes the gun into my skin, and a searing pain explodes in my skull, causing me to gasp.

"Let them go," Ciro demands, stepping forward.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you. I'll blow her head off."
