A few minutes later, Jordan carried her suitcase up the stairs and knocked on the bedroom door.

She answered.

“Here’s your suitcase,” he said.

“Thank you. Are we about ready to go into town?”

“Yes, as soon as you’re dressed.”

“Why don’t I drive my car? That way I can get a copy made of Marta’s photo,” she said. What she really wanted was to speak to the mother again.

“We’re going over there. We’ll stop and get a copy made,” he said. “It would be better if we were all seen together.”

The man wasn’t letting her out of his sight and that hindered her case.

Unable to think of another reason to take her car, she nodded. “I want to spend some time looking at each case.”

“Agreed,” he said. “As soon as you’re ready, we can leave.”

She closed the door and then checked her phone. She’d texted her boss to let him know she was going to be sending in a shirt that she wanted checked for DNA and blood.

Opening her suitcase, she pulled out jeans and her shirt that had U.S. Marshal on it. Also her boots. It was time to look like an official lawwoman. It was time to show these boys that she was serious about finding this horrific underworld.

Pulling on her gun holster, she walked out the bedroom door. She didn’t carry a purse, everything she needed was in her pockets.

“Let’s go,” she said hurrying down the stairs.

The men glanced up at her.

“Damn,” Ely said. “I didn’t know a U.S. Marshal could look so pretty wearing a badge.”

Of the two, he was the sweet talker. The one who wanted to fuck her again. Jordan was more standoffish. He did more observing than Ely. But she liked them both and knew they were excellent lovers.

Heat spiraled through her at the thought of what they’d done last night. But she had a case she needed to get working on again.

“Thank you, let’s roll,” she said. “There’s lots of work to get done today.”

Twenty minutes later, they pulled up in front of the sheriff’s office. When the three of them walked in, two older ladies were sitting at desks in the reception area. “Ma’am,” one of the ladies said on the phone, “just as soon as he comes in, I’ll have him call you. He was out late last night working a case.”

The receptionist shook her head at Jordan and held up a stack of message slips. He took them from her.

“Thank you for calling,” she said and hung up the phone.

“The newspaper reporter, that new girl, has been calling me every hour wanting to speak to you.”

“I’m busy,” Jordan said.

“Well, she’s keeping the phone lines hot,” the woman said.

“Pat, would you create Camila a place in my office to work?”

The woman’s brows rose as she gazed at her.

“She’s going to be with us for a little while.”

Camila stared at her and then walked into Jordan’s office. She didn’t have time for bullshit. She needed to get started on looking at all the cases and seeing if there were any similarities. Also, she needed to mail the shirt to her boss without anyone knowing.

Sinking down at his desk, her mind replayed what had happened right here on this desk last night. Her breath caught in her throat and she wanted them again. But first, she had to work.
