“Looks like you’re healing well.”

“Yeah, thanks to Lara.” He moves to sit up and grunts. “Can I get you guys anyth—”

“No, no,” Rick pushes him back down, “we bumped into Lara and just thought we’d stop and say hi.”

“That was nice of you, but as you can see,” Chase smiles again. “All I’m doing is lying here. Doctor’s orders,” then he makes eye contact with me.

Cassidy steps forward, “Well, we’ll leave you guys to it then. Get better soon, Chase. We’re meeting someone at the diner so we’ve got to split.”

“Who?” I ask.

Cassidy pinches me with a snarl, “Thosefriendsof mine.”

I want to yelp but I know better, so my mouth opens but no sound comes out.

She pulls Rick with her through the doorway, “Bye!”

“See you later,” says Rick.

Chase says, “Thanks for stopping by.”

And then it’s just the two of us—well, THAT was pointless!

There’s a moment of uncomfortable silence. Chase stares at me and then turns back to the television.

“How’re you feeling today,” I shift my stance and fold my arms.

He doesn’t take his eyes from the screen, “A little better I think. Not so stiff anymore.”

“Okay, did you wash today?”

“Yeah, the bandages got a little bit damp.”

“Sit up, let’s get those changed and then I’ll let you get back to your show.”

Chase complies without saying anything more. I get to work and he keeps watching TV while I do.

Not talking feels super weird. I’m not angry with him anymore. He didn’t drink and he’s being very polite, “So, what did you do today?”

He looks my way, “Nothing. Just rested. You?”

“Hung out with Stacey, did a bit of reading, it was boring, really.”

“Same,” he gives me a smile.

I pretend to watch the TV intermittently—we’ve run out of things to talk about. We don’t really know that much about each other.

“Have you had dinner yet?”

“No,” I tie off the bandage. “You?”

“Nope. Kind of getting tired of the microwave dinners.” He says it like it’s not a big deal. He’ll eat it if he has to…but…

“I could make us some omelets if you’d like. Cheese, mushroom, peppers, onion. Some toast? It’s more of a breakfast thing but it’ll be good to keep your energy up.”

“That sounds good. Only if you don’t mind though. There’s some canned soups and stuff I could probably go through too.”

“The cans will last. The vegetables are fresh. Better to use them while they’re still usable.”
