“Need any help?”

“Thanks, no. I’ve got it. You go back to your show.”

Chase lies back down on the bed and I go to the kitchen. All the broken dishes have been cleaned.

In fact, the kitchen looks a lot cleaner than when I was here the first time.

So, we’ve got bottle of whiskey that hasn’t been touched. A clean kitchen and a polite, happy, Chase.

And now I’m making eggs.

Is he manipulating me?

Nah, he’s not that smart…but then again…Dom did say that he was one of the best the military had. He can’t be a complete dolt. Theydosay that intelligent people obsess about life more than the stupid ones.

The only thing that qualifies asseasoningin this kitchen is salt, but I suppose that’s the most important one anyway. No big deal.

I call out, “Chase?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you want to eat at the table or in bed?”

“Table. I’ll be right there.”

While I’m setting two places, it occurs to me I could have made this for him and then left.I honestly have no idea why I’m staying.

When Chase comes into the kitchen, he’s no longer only in his boxers. He’s seen fit to put on a fresh t-shirt and some track pants. “If I’d know you were coming, I’d have dressed earlier,” he says shyly.

“That’s alright, your skin needs to breath. You can take the shirt off if you like.”

“Cool,” he doesn’t wait for me to ask twice…off comes the t-shirt.

And now I have to stare at his muscles while we eat.

“This looks great, thanks!”

“No problem.”

We sit, butter our toast and eat our omelets.

“So,” let’s try a bit of small talk. “Dom tells me you were in the military.”

“Uh huh,” he looks me blankly, then goes back to his food.

Hmm. Let’s try that again. “So, did you—”

“I don’t like to talk about it, Lara. It’s not you, it’s everybody, I just don’t talk about it. No offence, okay?”

“Sure,” I put my hands up in a wiping gesture. “Forget I brought it up.”

He gets a weird look on his face, then says, “You want to tell me about medical school?”

Well, he’s trying at least.“It’s not interesting unless you have a secret fetish for being bored senseless.”

He laughs…it’s a small laugh…but he does it. It seems natural enough.

After Chase wolfs down his omelet, I slide over what’s left of mine onto his plate. “I’m full, looks like you could use some more.”
