Starting with the fact that he’s a handsome and successful billionaire who wants to do good in the world. While I’m a struggling journalist who just ended her marriage and has lost her sense of self.

There is no world where the two of us make sense.

Yet, I spend the rest of the night sneaking glances at him. And the butterflies in my stomach beat their wings mercilessly any time he looks at me.

Shit.

I’m totally and completely screwed.

Chapter Seven: Danielle

"Do I have to come down there and do everything myself?” I hear Skittles meowing loudly in the background and the sound of a door opening and closing. “What is the matter with you, D? He obviously likes you.”

“He does not like me, Sav. He’s just being nice.”

And I can’t imagine a world in which Adrian feels the same as I do. So I don’t want to go down that path.

I don’t need to waste my time or his on a silly infatuation. Not when I am a grown-ass woman who can pull myself up my bootstraps and get over him.

It’s not like you were under him, to begin with. It shouldn’t be hard to get over your little crush.

Savannah sighs. “D, you deserve to be happy, and you’re on a vacation. It’s practically a rite of passage to have a steamy and illicit affair. Trust me, it’s all part of the healing process.”

I bring one leg up over the other and lace up my sneakers. “I had no idea you were a lifestyle coach now.”

“Fuck you. I know what I’m talking about. You need to make a move on Adrian before someone else does, and you spend the rest of the vacation moping and sulking.”

I gather my hair up into a high ponytail and sigh. “Okay, look. I’ve got my second appointment today with the therapist. If I promise to talk to her about it, will you stop nagging me?”

“Yes, for now. So go. I’ll check in later.”

When she hangs up, I pull the phone away from my ear to stare at it. Then I shove it into the pocket of my jeans.

I run into Adrian on the way out. He is deep in a serious-looking conversation with Maureen. The two of them offer me tight smiles on their way past.

I straighten my back and march over to the main cabin where the therapist is waiting for me in a small but cozy air-conditioned room.

Like clockwork, when I open the door, she stands up and holds out her hand.

Doctor Sheridan is a petite woman with streaks of white in her blonde hair, kind brown eyes, and an easy smile.

She holds a clipboard to her chest and smooths out her skirt before taking her usual seat in the armchair.

I sit across from her on a comfortable brown leather couch and cross one ankle over the other.

Late morning sun is pouring in through the open window, causing tiny particles of light to dance on the floorboards.

She shifts from one side to the other and sets the clipboard down in her lap. Then she looks directly at me and waits.

“How are you today, Danielle?”

“I’m fine. How are you?”

Doctor Sheridan offers me a smile. “I’m fine, thank you. So, how do you feel after our last session? Have you given any more thought to our conversation about Trevor?”

I lean back against the couch and cough. “Yes, but I don’t feel like blocking him is the answer. He’s just going to find other ways to reach me.”

Doctor Sheridan adjusts her glasses. “Do you feel like he’ll be able to reach you through your friend Savannah?”
