Because I already regret agreeing to them on a trial basis.

I should’ve known Brian wasn’t ready for them.

Doctor Masterson sat up straighter. “Is there a problem?”

“My brother appears to be experiencing delusions or paranoia. Maybe he even hallucinated the whole thing. I’m not sure to be honest.”

Doctor Masterson reached into her drawer and flipped a folder open. “What kind of delusions?”

“A naked woman in his bed trying to seduce him. Yesterday, he was in his room screaming. But when the staff got there, nothing seemed to be wrong. And they didn't find anyone or anything to indicate that there was something amiss.”

Doctor Masterson wrote something down. “So, you believe the woman wasn’t actually there?”

“Is it possible that his new medications are having an adverse effect on him?”

Doctor Masterson doesn’t respond for a long time.

“It can cause hallucinations. But that’s only in rare cases,” Doctor Masterson replies with a frown. “I’ve prescribed it hundreds of times before, and I’ve never seen this kind of reaction.”

“Can you prescribe something else?”

The last thing I need is to have Brian running around the ranch seeing things that aren’t there and hurting himself.

The pills are supposed to make him feel better not worse.

Doctor Masterson sets an empty bottle down on her desk and lifts her gaze up to mine. “Mr. Steele, I hate to be the one to point it out. But it’s much more likely that the pills would have a negative impact if they were being mixed with something else.”

I stand up so quickly the chair falls backward. “My brother is not on drugs.”

Doctor Masterson pushes her chair back. “I’m sorry, Mr. Steele. I understand that this is a difficult thing to reconcile yourself to, but—”

I hold a hand up. “No, he’s not on drugs. We are not entertaining that idea. I want you to prescribe something else.”

“Mr. Steele—”

“Or I’ll find someone else who will,” I interrupt, giving her a steely look. “I need someone who can get my brother the help he needs, Doctor Masterson. Not someone who is going to entertain conspiracy theories.”

Doctor Masterson stiffens. “Of course, Mr. Steele. I apologize.”

I nod and press my lips together.

When she sits back down, I turn around and leave the room.

Then I make a beeline to Brian’s new room.

He must be in the bathroom.

His room has been recently cleaned. It sparkles and gleams in the late morning sun. Lemon and citrus and a whiff of something I don’t recognize.

Dread settles in the center of my stomach.

I burst into the bathroom. Brian is in the tub. His head is thrown back, his arms at his sides. “Can you come back later? I’m busy.”

I step into the tile-floored bathroom and fix my gaze on an empty spot on the green-colored wall. “We need to talk.”

“Can’t it wait?”

“It can’t. I need to know what you’ve been mixing your pills with. I know you heard me, Brian. I don’t have time for this bullshit. I am trying to help you, but I can’t do that if you’re not honest with me.”
