“You’re still the boss. I even told Mac he’d be reporting to you. The contract doesn’t state anything about whom I can or cannot hire.” He turned toward his desk. “Do you want me to get it for you so you can re-read it because you obviously didn’t understand it the first time.”

“I understood it. I hire my team. Since I didn’t hire Mac, you need to fire him.” She turned and strode to her office. She stopped in the doorway, but Harker wasn’t behind her.

Mac looked up from his computer, his green eyes almost shining behind his glasses. “This is fabulous. I never would’ve thought to do this.” He pointed at the screen as he ran his other hand through his wavy black hair. “I have so much to learn. I was thrilled when Harker told me that I’d be working with you.”

“Oh…thanks…uhm.” Now, she felt like a shit. None of this was Mac’s fault.

“Are you going to work more tonight? I have a ton of questions and Harker mentioned that you were having some issues with the AI. We can look at that if you’d rather. Whatever you want.”

“Ah…no. I just came by to say goodnight. You can email me your questions so we can talk about them when you get here tomorrow.”

“Okay. Sure.” He turned back to the computer, lost in the world of code.

She wanted to slip into that world too. It was difficult and frustrating at times but never as confusing as real life. She went back to Harker’s office. “Don’t fire him. He shouldn’t suffer because...”

The room was empty. She walked into their house and found Harker in the kitchen, reheating leftovers.

He glanced at her. “Do you want pizza? Thai or Mexican?”

“You weren’t going to fire him, were you?” It was clear he’d had no intention of doing what she’d said.

“No.” He put some of three different types of food on two plates. “He’s perfect for the job and you’ll realize that once you get over your fit.”

“My fit? This is not a fit. You overstepped.”

“I own this business. Hiring the best person for the job isn’t overstepping.” He carried the plates to the table.

“You said I could do it. It’s my team.”

“Then why didn’t you? It’s been almost two weeks since we married, and you haven’t even started looking to hire anyone.”

“Because I’m not their boss yet.”

“Is that what this is about?”

“Don’t make it sound like it’s silly because it’s not.”

“No, but it is easy to fix.” He put utensils on the table for both of them. “I’ll send out a memo making you the manager of the engineering team.”

“You can’t do that.”

“Why not?”

“Because that could destroy my reputation.”

CHAPTER 29: Harker

“Destroy your reputation? I’m promoting you. That helps your reputation.” Harker opened the refrigerator and grabbed two bottles of water.

“You’re not listening,” Alison said through clenched teeth.

“I am listening to you, but you’re not making any sense. Officially promoting you to manager of the engineering department is the best solution to this situation and it can only help your reputation.” He sat at the table. Problem solved.

“What if I don’t conceive? There’s no guarantee that I will and if I don’t this whole deal goes away.”

“That won’t happen.” He wanted a child with her, not with anyone else.

“You don’t know that. I wasn’t tested for fertility. You weren’t tested for fertility.”
