“That’s not a reason to leave work early.”

“Being sick is.”

“You said you were fine.”

“I am, but I’m also sick of you.”

“Alison, I’m not going to sleep with anyone else.” He sounded as exasperated as she felt.

“Then it shouldn’t bother you to change the contract.”

“I made my reasons perfectly clear.”

“You’ve made everything perfectly clear and that’s great because now I get to make it crystal clear how I feel about it.” She was going to make him see her side of this if it killed her.

“Go ahead, Alison. Get back at me. Don’t let me touch you. It won’t last long. You like sex as much as I do.” He grinned. “Well, maybe not quite as much as I do.” He moved closer to her. “I just have to decide which will be more fun. Seducing you or waiting until you can’t take it anymore and letting you jump me.”

“That is never going to happen.” She turned and walked down the hallway, pulling her phone from her pocket. She dialed Ellie. She needed a friend’s shoulder to cry on and a partner in crime.

“Hey Alison,” said Ellie.

“Do you want to go out tonight? Later. After work?” She walked into the living room and flopped on the couch.

“Oh, I can’t. Adrian is having some of the guys over. They’re watching an MMA fight.”

“One of Marc’s fights?” She couldn’t believe Ellie would want to watch her ex, unless he was going to get his ass kicked.

“No. Not Marc.” Ellie laughed. “There’s no way I’d let Adrian watch that here. I’d probably bash the TV with a bat as soon as I saw the bastard.”

“I was wondering.” Their breakup hadn’t been amicable.

“Do you and Harker want to come over here? Adrian ordered plenty of food.”

“I’m not going anywhere with Harker.”

“Uh-oh. What happened?”

“Do you have an hour?” It’d take a least that long for her to get out her frustrations.

“No. Can you give me the abridged version now and the longer one later?”

“I thought you couldn’t go out.”

“I thought you wanted to double-date but since it’s just you and me, I can definitely go. So what happened?” asked Ellie.

“The short version is that I didn’t understand the contract and the only one who has to be monogamous is me.”

“What? It’s actually in the contract that he can sleep with other women, but you can’t have sex with other men?”

“Yeah, and he refuses to change it. He says that other couples don’t need a contract to be faithful and that he has no intention of having sex with anyone else.”

“Don’t let him give you that shit. He may not be planning it exactly but he’s leaving that option open. Men can be such lying, cheating assholes.”

“I know.” Alison felt vindicated. If Ellie agreed with her then she wasn’t being unreasonable. It didn’t matter that Ellie had a lot to say about cheaters because every one of her boyfriends before Adrian had cheated on her.

“Men will make excuses for everything,” continued Ellie. “One of my exes actually argued that he hadn’t cheated because they’d only had oral sex. Can you believe that?”

“Oh…” Alison stood. “That’s it.”
