Mac stared at Alison’s hand on his arm.

“Alison.” There was a warning in his tone and her eyes met his. She let go of Mac as Harker stalked toward her. “Close the door, Mac.”

“Got it.” The kid almost ran out of the room, shutting the door behind him.

“Harker, don’t.” She backed away, hitting the door. “Go back to your desk.”

“No.” He stopped right in front of her.

“Did you shower?” She inhaled deeply.

“I did.” He leaned closer, his lips next to her ear.

“You shouldn’t have.” She turned away from him, her hand going to his chest, pushing him back but he wasn’t going anywhere. “Nothing is going to happen. I mean it, Harker.”

“I don’t think you do. Not really.” He let his lips brush against her ear, breathing her in. He’d missed her so much. “I think you want this as much as I do.”

“I don’t.” She shoved his chest and stepped aside. “Either tell me what you want…work related or I’m leaving.”

He wasn’t giving up that easily. “I thought we could discuss…the pen.”

“The…I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her chin jutted out stubbornly but her face heated.

“I think you do.” He took her hand, running his fingers along hers like he’d stroked the pen. “Tell the truth. You miss this.”

“I do.”

His eyes darted to hers. He hadn’t expected her to admit it.

“But it doesn’t matter.” She pulled her hand from his. “Because nothing is going to happen.”

“Damn it, Alison. You want this as much as I do.”

“No.” She glared at him. “I want it more, but you don’t understand that. If you did, you’d let me leave.”

“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”

“Do not call me stupid.” Her face grew more flushed. “I am not stupid and what I feel is not stupid. Just because you don’t understand…”

He was done talking. He grabbed her chin and kissed her. She stiffened and he nipped her lower lip. Her mouth opened just a little and he surged inside, possessing her. She opened wider and he tipped her head, deepening the kiss and showing her that she belonged to him. His hand slid over her rounded belly and between her legs. She gasped against his lips as he stroked her. He tugged at her pants, trying to get them out of his way but her stomach made that difficult. He broke the kiss and grabbed her pants with both hands. He had to get her naked, had to touch her slick, hot flesh and prove to her and himself that she wanted this. She wanted him.

He pushed her pants down and she inhaled, the sound rattly and then she sobbed. He froze. That wasn’t a sound of passion. He forced himself to look at her face and his heart shattered. Her eyes were closed, and tears streamed down her cheeks. Her body might want him, but she didn’t. He bent, grabbing her pants and pulling them back up.

“Harker?” Her voice was soft, hesitant.

He turned, unable to look at her. He didn’t want to see the hatred and disgust in her eyes.

“Harker?” she repeated.

“Go. Now.” He stared at the wall until he heard the click of the door. Then he dropped into his chair and put his head in his hands. It was over. She really didn’t want him anymore.

Book 4: Having the Baby

CHAPTER 1: Alison

Alison waddled out of the bedroom, stopping in mid-stride as another contraction surged through her. They’d been coming all night, but she wasn’t taking another needless trip to the hospital for Braxton Hicks. Her mother would kill her if she didn’t make the baby shower today. Mom was still a bit perturbed that she’d had to decorate in greens and yellows because Alison and Harker had decided to wait to find out the gender of the baby.

She took a deep breath when the contraction subsided and then continued down the hallway. She had three more weeks before her due date and it couldn’t come fast enough. If this kid decided to stay inside a little longer, she’d have to start walking down the hallway sideways.
