I nod. “Yeah.”

She takes a sip of her wine. “Well, you should. What the hell were you thinking, Kai?”

I gulp mine. “Can we not do this today? I already feel bad enough.”

“You have guys you can call when you want sex. Why did you give in to him?”

I shrug. “You don’t get it, Kenzie.”

“Get what?”

“I’m still in love with him. It doesn’t just go away because I sleep with someone else.”

“I get that. I do. But he doesn’t deserve you. You can’t just give up the goods because he apologized.”

“I didn’t plan to. It just happened.”

She laughs. “That is so cliché.”

I bury my head in my hands. “Ugh, he was so fucking sexy. Even though I tried, I couldn’t resist him. I wanted to slap him and fuck him at the same time.”

She stares out at the city, taking in the scenery from my balcony. The sunlight beams across her golden skin as she’s deep in thought. She turns around and looks at me. “I don’t like this. You know I’ll support whatever decision you decide to make, but just be careful.”

“He said he wants to earn his place in my life again.”

“Is that what you want?”

“Honestly, I don’t know what I want.”

“Did he, at least, explain to you why he ended things?”

I shake my head. “Not really. Just that he had some shit going on in his life that had nothing to do with me.”

My thoughts drift back to that day.

“There’s something I need to talk to you about.”

“I have something to talk to you about, too.”

He cocks his head to the side. “Okay. You go first.”

I straighten in my seat and clear my throat before I say the speech I’ve been practicing all day. “We’ve been together for six months now. To some, that may not seem like a long time, but it didn’t take long for me to fall for you, Jaxon.” He watches me quietly, allowing me to finish. “You know how much I love you. And I know how much you love me. I want it all with you.” My eyes turn watery as my emotions take over. “Eventually, I want to be your wife. I want to have lots of babies with you and grow old together.” He looks around the restaurant before opening his mouth to speak. I don’t give him the chance. “I’m not proposing, if that’s what you’re thinking.” He sighs with relief. “I said all of that to say that I think it’s time I give you this.”

I slide the box toward him with shaky fingers. He opens it quickly, and I expect him to smile. But instead, his expression turns grim. “I’m asking you to move in with me. You’re always at my place anyway, so I figured, why not take the next step?”

He looks around the restaurant again before leaning over. “I have another three months left in my lease.”

“I know. But instead of renewing it, you can move in with me. My mortgage is way less than what you pay in rent, and we’ll be able to save more money. I also think—”

“Kai,” he interrupts.

Panic washes over me as I realize he’s not happy about this. “Jaxon, do you not want to move in with me?”

He closes his eyes tightly before answering me in a whisper, “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I think we should go our separate ways.”

The color drains from my face. “Separate ways. You’re breaking up with me?”
