Page 809 of Not Over You

This is a quiet and romantic restaurant. So, my voice rises loud enough for the other customers to take notice. “Kai, it’s—”

I snatch the box away from him and fumble as I shove it back in my purse. “I thought you wanted this. I thought you wanted a future with me.”

“Let me explain.”

I stand. “No. I’m not interested in anything you have to say.”

He rises from his seat. “Don’t leave like this. You’re upset.”

“You’re fucking right, I’m upset!”

He rounds the table and grabs my arm gently. “Let’s go outside and finish this conversation.”

I snatch my arm away. “Don’t touch me.”

“Kai, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—”

“Screw you,” I hiss. “Lose my number, and don’t you ever contact me again.”

I turned on my heels and stomped out of the restaurant with what little bit of decency I had left. I went straight home, where I waited. And waited. I waited for him to call me. To text me. To come over. I thought he would change his mind and come back to me. But he didn’t. That was the last time I saw or heard from him. I put myself out there and spilled my undying love for him, and in return, he made me look like a fool. Kenzie shoves her phone in my face, breaking my train of thought. “This is him.”

“Who am I looking at?”

“Caleb. The doctor I was telling you about.”

She’s right. He’s very handsome, and certainly someone I’d date or hook up with. But as handsome as he is, I don’t have the urge to meet him. In fact, I haven’t had the urge to entertain anyone else since sleeping with Jaxon. I squint to get a better look at the screen. “How do you know him?”

“He’s a friend of Liam’s.”

We’re interrupted by my doorbell. I rise to answer it, and Kenzie follows suit. I open the door and am hit with surprise when I see who’s on the other side of it. “Jaxon, what are you doing here?”

He has a bag in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other. “I came by to bring you this.” He passes me the bag, and I open it. “It’s your favorite. Banana cream.”

The smell of sweetness invades my nostrils, and the sight of the freshly baked doughnut makes me drool. “Thank you.”

I take the bottle of wine from him as I step aside and allow him in. We walk into the kitchen, where Kenzie is drinking a bottled water. “Oh, hell no.”

“Good to see you too, Kenzie. It’s been a while.”

She crosses her arms. “Not long enough. And we already have wine.”

“Okay, you two,” I warn as I place the bottle on the counter.

The room grows quiet. Jaxon shoves his hands inside the pockets of his dark denim jeans. Kenzie looks between us before she speaks. “I’ll give you two some privacy. Are you okay?”

I nod. “Yes, I’m fine.”

She grabs her purse. “Okay. I’ll call you later.”

She rushes off without saying goodbye to Jaxon. When the front door slams, he smiles widely. “Let me guess. She hates me now.”

“Can you blame her?”

He shakes his head. “No.”

I stand in front of him on the opposite side of the granite island. I’m not taking any chances this time. “So, what brings you by?”

“I wanted to see you.”
